Fido would love to visit Denmark and the Netherlands where fossilized teeth have been found of her species.
The Spiny Dogfish shark may have been named because many types move in large groups or packs like wild dogs. Another theory is that dogfish may have been given their name because they are the most common sharks. In the past, any common type of plant or animal was given the name "dog."
They have spines in front of their dorsal fins which they use defensively. They inject a predator with a mild venom.
Spiny dogfish can live 70 to 100 years. The age of younger fish can be measured from annual growth rings on the fin spines. They wear down in older fish.
The meat is served in many countries. In Europe as fish and chips, being called 'rock salmon' until the term was outlawed.
