About This Item

ACME clicker

This is a replica of the "ACME clicker No 470", also called "cricket". It was a simple toy used by the paratroopers of 101st US Airborne soldiers  on June 6th 1944 (D-Day) to differentiate friend from foe when they were dispersed in enemy country in the dark of the night.

Challenge: one click
Response: two clicks

From  childhood on I was impressed that thousands of young men risked their lives to bring freedom back to Europe and end Nazi oppression.

Remembering their feat reminds me  that the liberty of thought, speech and action, although a basic human right, must not be taken for granted, but has at various times been won through hardship and sacrifice.

ACTIVITY:

When logging, you are invited to post an example of  what liberty/freedom means to you and/or a sacrifice you made/would make for it (text or photo).
