Well, I wasn't able to get up to Barriere as hoped, but I did get pics of R.I.T. near the "Cedar Hill Fire" outside of Falkland (fire was in summer of 2003 at the same time as the Barriere fire and just before the Okanagan Mtn fire). I then dropped him off in a cache that overlooks both the Garnet fire of 1994 (to the south) and the Okanagan Mtn fire of 2003 (to the east and north).

  • Sign on highway beside site of Falkland fire
  • R.I.T. checking out Falkland fire regrowth
  • The fire jumped the highway at this point One house was destroyed during this forest fire. I am parked right in front of the new house (built on the same site) in order to take this picture.
  • R.I.T. visiting Giant's Head This TB drove all the way to Kamloops and then back before choosing this spot for a rest.

This fireman was checking out the "Garnet Fire" of 1994. He has only been here a very short time but since this fire site is doing so well, he decided to hitch a ride with us back to Kamloops to visit a more recent forest fire site (or two). We will try to find a cache near Barriere, the site of one of BC's major forest fires in 2003. This fire destroyed most of the tiny community of Louis Creek (just south of Barriere) as well as its major employer, Tolko mill. The community is rebuilding but I'm sure one more helping hand would be appreciated. It is men and women like "R.I.T" that helped save the community of Barriere as it was almost completely encircled by the fire.

It may be a couple of weeks before we can get up that way to show him the sites and find a place for him, but we'll do our best. I'll try to get some photos of him in the "black" forests too.

We figured since he's been here almost a year, he could move on before winter. Will send him to help others in need.
