Hi and thanks for looking... This Geocoin was released on May 20, 2020, at GC7GZJ5 in Harrison, NY... Both the date and location of the release of this beautiful coin has special meaning and significance in our history of voyaging...
The Geocoin symbolizes the Portuguese intensive maritime exploration during the 15 and 16th century... Because the Portuguese were vigorous navigators, they lead many discoveries which became known as the Age of Discovery... It was on May 20, 1498, that Vasco da Gama and his fleet landed in Calicut, India, marking a breakthrough and establishing a safer trade route between Europe and India... On this date, 522 years later, this coin sets sail in search of new caches...
Amelia Earhart was an American aviation pioneer. She set many records including the first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic... On May 20, 1937, Earhart took off in an attempt to brake another record by flying across the globe... She had a set route planned over the course of 6 to 7 weeks... With two stops left in her journey, she disappeared... On this day, 83 years later, this geocoin will also take flight on its own little journey from GC7GZJ5, but this time, with hopes of a different outcome...
I have been Geocaching since 2014, but recently I have picked up the hobby more frequently since my daughter reached the age of interest... We learned about trackables this year and the coin was one of the first to buy (the’re expensive)... Find Amelia was our first multi-cache and it was a great experience... What a perfect way to tie the stories together and send this Astrolabe on its way... Thank you for reading and participating...
Take care and HAPPY GEOCACHING....
About the coin from the seller:
“This was the first Portuguese geocoin ever produced! The mentors of the project were two well-known Portuguese geocachers, who convinced a geocoin producer and vendor to back up the idea and produce this nice geocoin. At that time it was not a big sales success, but this is currently one of the most wanted Portuguese geocoins. The geocoin features a red cross in the front and an astrolabe in the back, which invokes the Portuguese history at the time of the discoveries, when portuguese sailors were crossing the oceans and were considered the best navigators in the world.
