Current Goal

My owner and I met each other in Lead, South Dakota several years ago. I sure would like to make a trip back out Lead or somewhere in the Black Hills sometime in the future. I'd like to visit other mining areas around the country such as Montana, California, Idaho, and Colorado.

About This Item

This is a solid brass belt buckle that originated from a famous mining company that got its start in 1876 in Lead, South Dakota.

MaxB's Escorted TB Group Tour "Tech Toots head for Copper Country" photo album is now available. MaxB’s last trip to the UP and Michigan Tech University was many years before they starting geocaching. This trip was enjoyable as MaxB related her long ago UP stories to the tour group as we passed through Mackinaw towards Copper Country. Several highlights of the trip will remain in their memories.

As we stopped at Mackinaw to pick up the required famous fudge and karmel corn, MaxB couldn’t believe how much the town had changed.
1. We stopped at the historic lighthouse and viewed the Mackinaw bridge before crossing the historic span.
2. Next stop was the town of Marquette, where many a Tech student hitchhiked the 100 miles for school to get their McDonald’s fix. When we visited here, the train tracks still ran out onto the ore ship loading dock on Lake Superior.
3. The newest attraction that MaxB couldn’t pass up was “Da Yooper Tourist Trap” (just outside of Ishpeming), the only problem was holding the side splitting laughter down in the bus. The chiquito (National Bird of the UP – cross between a chicken and mosquito) found only in the UP.
4. Next stop was MTU’s campus, where everyone got their photos taken at the entrance to Tech. They were also welcomed to town by the Copper Miner.
5. MaxB had to go visit the Houghton Breakers (a student hangout) to see the sunset over Lake Superior.
The next day was the trip to visit the Copper Country all the way to the top of the Keweenaw. During the trip several enjoyable and interesting history was provided to the tour participants.
6. TB Belt Buckle with his extensive mining knowledge lead the tour while we visited the Quincy Mine Historical Park.

The tour group stopped and had their pictures taken at the entrance to Michigan Tech University campus. After crossing the Mackinaw Bridge yesterday into the UP they traveled westward towards Copper Harbor. Several highlight of today's tour will remain in their memories.

First a stop at Marquette and looking over the old ore loading docks on Lake Superior.
Next they visited Da Yooper Tourist Trap (just outside of Ishpeming), the only problem was holding the side splitting laughter down in the bus. Special photos will be posted by the end of the week.
