Anything for education! I was thrilled to find. Will relocate soon to the Lancaster, PA area. Just a note: I am a retired soldier who was once stationed at Fort Polk, LA.

As a teacher, I love the idea that you're tracking a travel bug as a class project! I picked up this TB at City View in Franklin, PA. Franklin is a small town in northwestern PA, and is the County Seat of Venango County.

This location had long accommodated Indian settlements when, in the 1740’s, Scottish fur trader John Fraser began a trading post. A French expedition in 1749 laid claim to the site and, in 1753, the French expelled British traders and made plans to construct a fort around Fraser’s abandoned trading post. Later that year, a young George Washington, from Virginia, was dispatched to the region to warn the French that they were trespassing on land claimed by England. In the years following, Franklin continued a slow but steady growth, until the entire region became a center for worldwide oil production following Colonel Edwin Drake’s 1859 discovery of oil in nearby Titusville.

Harmony, PA, is a small town north of Pittsburgh. In the early 1800s it was founded by the Harmonist Society, apparently a utopian, quasi-religious community. If I can figure out how to post pictures, I have some nice ones of the town square and the historical marker that talks about the Harmonists. In the fall of 2004 the creek that winds around the historic district of Harmony flooded in the aftermath of subsequent hurricanes Francis and Ivan, and many houses were damaged. An impressive community effort and lots of hard work have mostly restored the town. The second leg of this multi-cache took us to the adjoining small town of Zelienople.
