  • Another cache - another ship... ... The ship is called "HMS President" and there is a cache close by. Unfortunately, the cache is only a micro so no room to leave it. The same problem with the other two caches I did today.

The mission for this coin is to visit seaports. Part of my job involves visiting some of our ships and I had to visit a French cable laying ship, Ile de Brehat, in Brest, France. As the coin was in my possession I thought I would take it with me. So, it flew from City Airport in London to Paris (Orly) then onto Brest. The ship is in the SOBRENA shipyard to the east of Brest whilst its Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) is taken off the ship. The ROV is capable of diving to 2000m water depth and, for the past few years has been involved in many cable repairs in the Atlantic.

  • View from the owner's cabin... The "Kingfisher" coin basks in the sunshine whilst looking at the hangar deck of Ile de Brehat. Brest town centre lies a couple of kilometres to the east.
  • Sitting on the port manipulator arm... The "Kingfisher" coin takes a rest on one of the ROVs two manipulators. The "prongs" are the fingers and the place where the coin sits is on the back of the "fingers".
  • Where's the coin... The coin is so small in comparison to the ROV that it is very hard to see it in this picture - unless you know where to look!
  • A French gas carrier... The "Kingfisher" coin looks at a French LPG tanker also in the yard for repairs. The coin is sitting on part of the TSS tracking system that is used for tracking undersea communications cables and for measuring how deep below the seabed the cable is buried.

I don't normally move TBs and geocoins but as this one has been here for five months I thought it was time to move it on. I will release it in the south of England when I get home.
