About This Item

Hanging with Dave Matthews and My Friend Debbie

This is my personal travel bug. In addition to keeping track of my mileage, I'll use it record an ongoing log of our adventures.

This Bug shares my screenname that I use on various DMB forums. It's play on the song title, "One Sweet World" and my first name. The Dave Matthews Band is my favorite band and I've seen them in concert over 50 times. I've traveled across the country to see them play making it as far as Washington state! I thought it fitting name for my personal TB, as I've been quite the travelbug in my past!

[Warning: The TB logs and photos may contain spoilers.]

If you meet me on a geocache hunt, ask me for the TB tracking number and you can log a find.

Retrieve It from a Cache 9/27/2005 Bear Paughs retrieved it from The Feast of Hraesvelg New York   Visit Log

So the cache page for this cemetary cache warned us about zombies, but not witches! As we turned the corner coming up the hill we saw there were three people, probably early twenties, sitting in one of the memorials. They had some stuff laid out in front of them on a little mat. It wasn't a picnic, nor do I think it was drugs. I think they were doing some sort of wiccan ceremony or something. We startled them, which I feel kind of bad about. Before we had a chance to turn around and leave, they left instead. They said hello, asked the boys how they were, and before we knew it, they were gone down the hill. I guess they term 'muggle' wouldn't really pertain to them, now would it?

After the excitement of scaring the witches away, we began our hunt. It took a long time for us to find this cache. Probably an hour at least. It was definitely a good hiding spot. I wished I had the clue with us, but I discovered I left the PDA at home. But I don't think the clue would have helped, now that I've seen it. I think it would have kept us looking longer at the areas where it wasn't, especially one that I already spent way too much searching. Good hide.

Cemetary caches are amongst our favorites. This one was so beautiful, some of the nicest headstones I've seen. This particular part of the cemetary was really cool, very old. I'm assuming the families buried here were the same ones parts of the area were named after, like the Dickinsons, and Colesvilles. There was one cross that was really beautiful for a soldier that died in 1918. On the back it said he was buried in an American cemetary in France. Julian seems to be totally over his fear of cemetaries. Ryder loves them, and has been eager to do this cache. We had a great time with this one.

We had been planning on hitting Ely Park and Otsiningo Overlook after this cache, but we had to abort that plan due to the impending darkness and the absence of the PDA. (The note on my Legend C - thanks GSAK! - indicated one of these was a multi, and without the Palm we didn't know if we'd be able to do it anyway, since we hadn't read the cache page.) Wanting to take full advantage of our time, however, we left here and went to do Coverup next.

Retrieve It from a Cache 9/25/2005 Bear Paughs retrieved it from cache-a-saurus New York   Visit Log

Last cache of the day for us, as we had to get home to Mr. Bear Paugh and the littlest Bear. We were glad this one was on the way back to the car so we could squeeze it in. We didn't have a trail map, so I don't know if there are names to the trails, but we were calling this one the birdhouse trail because of all the birdhouses on the way from the cache to the parking area. It was a wonderful walk with great views of the surrounding mountains.

Another wonderful day with Julian. He grabbed my hand as we walked. Caching has been the most wonderful thing for our relationship. Finally we connect on something, and connecting with Julian can be difficult because he has his own interests and is usually content to be doing his own thing by himself. He said he liked Jones Park even better than Stair Park, even though Jones Park doesn't have a playground. It's the walking and seeing things that he likes best, and spending time with me.

We talked about how we can't understand why Ryder doesn't always want to come -- we agreed that we'd rather be out on hiking trails than inside doing something, even if there was no "treasure" to find. And Julian is better behaved when it's just the two of us -- probably because he's not competing for attention with Ryder. I told him I don't like to have to scold him or remind him of the rules, that it's not fun for me either, and that's one of the reasons I like it when it's just the two of us.

He's just such a great kid, and I can't express how much I love sharing this activity with him. We also talked a little about what we'll do for caching in the winter, because neither one of us wants to give it up just because the weather may not be good!

Retrieve It from a Cache 9/25/2005 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Jonesin' to cache New York   Visit Log

This was a third find of the day, second in Jones Park. We were really hoping to get the geocoin, but another cacher picked it up earlier today before we got there. Read his log, and it turns out it was his first geocoin. So I feel better about having missed it to another newbie. I left a congratulatory note on the geocoin page for that cacher.

Picked up our second TB of the day, "Doggone Silly", and took a pic of Julian wearing the silly glasses. I really like the goal of this bug, to go anywhere but just have pics taken of people or things wearing the glasses. There's a lot of room for creativity there, I just wish more people had taken and posted pictures. It's only polite, and I'm sure the owner loves seeing the photos. We'll try to take a couple more before dropping this somewhere.

Easy cache. I spied this one first, but Julian found the first 3 of the day (when you count the parts of the multi separately).

I wish we had had more time, but we had to get back home to Steve and Ryder. Otherwise from here we would have gone after Fifteen and Keepin' Up with the Joneses. We had to head back to the car, however, to try to make it home in time. We did stop once more to get Cache-a-Saurus, only because it was on the way.

Our first time visiting Jones Park, and man did we love it. Terrific hiking trails. We compared it to the things we loved about Stair Park last weekend, but this was so much bigger with more trails.

Julian found parts 1 and 2. We had to consult the clue for part 3, but we finally found it. The hiding spot is in pretty bad shape. This was a really great multi-cache. Traditional multi (I guess there's a puzzle that requires solving during NBA season), but we were taken to really nice spots. It was just a perfect day for it. We are very much looking forward to visiting this park again with Dad and Ryder, maybe in 2-3 weeks when it's just a little bit cooler and the leaves have changed more.

First cache of the day. We discovered someone else had beat us to this cache today -- a pattern that would be repeated over the course of our outing.

Nice easy find. Julian found it quickly (well, mom may have spotted it first and then let him find it 😉.) The hardest part was finding the road leading up to the cache -- we had to turn around further down the road and come back for it. It was a nice start to our day, a nice easy find. Just what one wants after a week with little caching, and the last cache that was attempted was a DNF!

Left this cache and went onto Jones Park to try the ones hidden there.

Retrieve It from a Cache 9/19/2005 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Sneaky Sneaky New York   Visit Log

Sneaky Sneaky is a truly fun multi. We loved it from start to finish. We needed to get home, and it was starting to get dark, so we were worried we might not find this in time. It took us a few minutes to find it -- very cleverly hidden. We almost missed it! It was getting dark, so the pictures we took didn't come out great. We made it back to the car just in time to get out of there before the gate was closed. Glad to have made it without having to save it for yet another day! Though, we are kind of sorry this cache is over, we enjoyed it so much! I'd love to see something like this, but with more stages to it.

On a side note, we picked up the Sheba Travel Bug here. We wish we came across more TBs.

Retrieve It from a Cache 9/19/2005 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Otsiningo North New York   Visit Log

More soccer threatening to stand in our way! The hardest part was finding a place to park because of the game going on.

Very easy cache to find. The walk was enjoyable enough. Not my favorite kind -- I much prefer to walk in the woods than on a paved trail. It just can be so monotonous and feels like you're walking forever. (That's one of the reasons we're holding off on doing the caches along the Vestal Rail Trail -- just a walk we don't find very fun.) At least we had the views of the river to make it more interesting.

The cache site was cool, cleverly placed. Julian found it in seconds, before I was even off the trail. Why there was a baggie on the outside of the cache, I really don't understand. It was just messy. It was in a plastic ammo box that should have sufficed as outer cover. (Actually, it was in a film cannister that was inside the ammo box that was in the baggie.) At least someone had the forethought to put a bottle of hand sanitizer inside. We had our own with us, so we didn't need to use it. We wouldn't need to use any at all if the baggie wasn't there. Yuck!

Time was running short, so we hurried as quickly as we could back to the car so we could take care of some unfinished business with Sneaky Sneaky before going home.

Retrieve It from a Cache 9/19/2005 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Another Fall Through Ginnungagap New York   Visit Log

Here's another park that's relatively close to home. Nice park, kind of small, but with a nice enough playground and a small covered pavillion. There's also a sportsfield, which is nice, but could have stood in the way of us finding the cache. Luckily we found this one just before the soccer muggles started to arrive. No sooner had I replaced the cache and climbed down than they started to arrive in hordes, by the minivan-full.

This was a new container type for us. It was pretty clever. I think we're getting better at identifying cache containers that we're unfamiliar with.

From here headed further down Front Street to do Otsiningo North.

Retrieve It from a Cache 9/18/2005 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Where Nidhogg Eternally Gnaws New York   Visit Log

One would think that with a name like Fuller Hollow Park, that this would be located on Fuller Hollow Road -- not so! Finding the park was the most difficult part of our day! We drove around for what seemed like forever before we finally found the park entrance.

After getting out of the car, it took all of three minutes to walk to the cache site and find it. Good thing, too, as we had to get back home and we didn't want to be late. This park wasn't all that special, but the cache site was very pretty. A good way to end our day.
