About This Item

Hanging with Dave Matthews and My Friend Debbie

This is my personal travel bug. In addition to keeping track of my mileage, I'll use it record an ongoing log of our adventures.

This Bug shares my screenname that I use on various DMB forums. It's play on the song title, "One Sweet World" and my first name. The Dave Matthews Band is my favorite band and I've seen them in concert over 50 times. I've traveled across the country to see them play making it as far as Washington state! I thought it fitting name for my personal TB, as I've been quite the travelbug in my past!

[Warning: The TB logs and photos may contain spoilers.]

If you meet me on a geocache hunt, ask me for the TB tracking number and you can log a find.

Retrieve It from a Cache 8/18/2005 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Gaze Upon the Fangorn Forest... with Cody New York   Visit Log

This was an excellent cache. I really liked the new location, except I don't know which was worse -- the way down or the way up! Julian did this one with me while Ryder stayed home with Steve, although I made him stand far back while I went after the cache. Enjoyed it lots, and took some pics for the August Jeep photo contest. (I'm very happy with the one we submitted as our entry -- check out my gallery to see the official photo.) Best of all, we can cross our very first DNF off our list!

Glad to get this one off our DNF list! It only took three times, geesh! Our coordinates were WAAAAAAYYYYYY off -- 86 feet our GPSr said. Nice little cache in a nice little park. Ryder opted not to trade anything in favor of getting his first pick at our next larger cache.

What a great cache! Very fun micro indeed, and Steve and I were FTF! Love those late-late-night Wegmans runs.

Got this micro off our list finally. The funny thing is, before we had a GPS we were in a parking lot looking for micros of this type. And on both occasions we were here before I did look at the right spot. Just not long enough and I got spooked (especially with the nest)and backed away from the cachesite quickly both times. I have to learn my lesson and know that I should examine everything with my hands, every nook and cranny. This was fun, glad we finished it!

After this cache I told Julian he is my warrior. Ryder opted to stay and spend some time with Grandpa, so it was just Juli and I today. (Probably better, as I don't know how Ryder would have handled the area we had to bushwack through to get to the cache -- very challenging.)

Julian is my warrior because, at only 9 years old, he is completely enthusiastic everytime we go out caching, and he never gives up. For being such a gentle soul as he is, he has such determination and perseverance when it comes to the most difficult of terrains. He's up for anything and battles his way through whatever he must to get to that cache. He can't wait until we attempt the Return of Cody again -- he's ready to take it on and claim the mountain as his own!

It took us a few tries before we could get to this cache. The first time the gate was locked. The second time we were going to go, we were prevented because there was a police-supervised CITO happening. After that they mowed down most of the area, which was awesome for us. When we finally made this attempt we at first thought the terrain rating would have to be lowered -- we were wrong, though. It took a long time to get to the actual cache.

This was a really neat hide! We loved the placement of the cache, very creative!

Whew! Round You Go was probably the easiest for us so far! Somehow the geko 201 that usually loses signal under tree cover similar to that found at Round Top miraculously led us dead on to the cache. I said to the boys, "that's the first place we should look", and voila, there it was. Lots of really cute kid toys in this cache. Even the trek back up the hill wasn't bad at all (certainly not compared to the Return of Cody!).

I had originally planned for us to attempt University Singles next, but we realized we'd been out a long time and had forgotten to eat lunch. So we left and made a quick stop at West Endicott Park instead to do a quick try at Merry Go Round Part 1. Unfortunatly that was not as successful as the rest of our day had been. I had no idea what we were looking for. We tried everywhere. Spent about 20 minutes and then rode the carousel before heading home to get lunch and spend some time with Steve.

Overall we had a really great day. I hope we are able to get out again this weekend for a long trip such as this.

Up to 20 finds now. Not bad for having the GPSr just over 3 weeks. We're definitely hooked on this activity! Loving it!

Happy to celebrate our first multi! Part one was quickly found, and I worked on the coordinates for part two while the boys played on the playground. I also moved my car about 4 times, ultimately making our walk that much longer!

Today demonstrates why I look forward to upgrading to a GPS with mapping capabilities. We mistakenly thought we could get to the 2nd part from where we were. We tracked along the river, thinking we could get to where we needed to be if we just kept walking a little further. Luckily it was a really nice walk, or all the extra treking would have been a bummer. Anyway, I took my head out of my butt and finally figured out how to make the approach to part two. Having maps on my unit would have made it clear from the start where to go.

Part two was in a great spot. I especially loved that I didn't have to bushwack through chest-high foliage. We saw a bunch of kayakers breeze by us while we were searching for the cache, which was hidden in a really great spot. The approach to the cachesite was interesting as well, with what seemed like hundreds of thousands of crickets jumping all over the place around us as we walked through.

The boys got dollar coins, and I took a really cute geocaching themed button. We left good trade items in return, but it would have been better if we had had smaller items with us. We left the cache container stuffed to the brim. It closed tightly, but it is PACKED! To avoid the same mistake in the future we stopped on the way to our next cache and picked up some really nice trade items that are much smaller than those we left today. We got some mini rubics cubes, some small caribiner/compasses, and the last whistle/led light/compass. We also saw they had packages of 2 magnetic keyholders for a buck, and picked up a package in case we become inspired to place a micro with one in the future.

Overall, this leg of today's trip was just great.

We really enjoyed this microcache in an area we wouldn't have visited otherwise. U-E Highschool struck up the band for us, which Julian and Ryder really loved. Already they're talking about coming back here instead of the track where we usually walk and run.

No pictures here, as I didn't think to bring the camera out of the trunk for a microcache, but there were some nice views that we would have liked to have captured.

Logging personal TB miles. Got a watchlist notification that a WJTB had been dropped in this cache and decided to do it since it's rather close and so I'd have another jeep to enter into August's photo contest. Picked up a flashlight on the way, luckily, and made my way to the cache. This was fun. I think there's another cache (micro?) at this location, but I didn't have to time to check -- Steve had ordered a pizza that he wanted me to pick up so I had to get out of there. This was my first success at night-caching, and it was a lot of fun!

Found part one of this cache pretty easily. Have the coordinates for part two, but unable to find the cache. After this we headed over to find Binghamton Like You've Never Seen It Before, also with no luck. We forgot our camera. And seeing how I am already dying, we won't be back soon to try again. I'm more upset about forgetting the camera than not finding the caches.

Julian and I did have a wonderful afternoon together. As we were climbing he said to me at one point, "I have a really good life, I'm a lucky kid." Then he thanked me for making parts of his life really good. I almost cried. I would have, if I wasn't about to die of heat exhaustion. We were very proud of ourselves for what we did accomplish today, find or no find, pictures or no pictures. It was a perfect afternoon together.
