Our next stop was the Evergreen Cemetery. This is where Elizabeth Thorn lived with her husband, Peter, her parents, and their two small boys. Peter was in the army when the battle came to Gettysburg, so it was up to Elizabeth to care for the cemetery. She was 6 months pregnant in July of 1863. After the Battle of Gettysburg, Elizabeth dug over 100 graves by hand before re-enforcements arrived. This is one of the newest statues in Gettysburg.
Elizabeth did deliver her baby, a girl whom she named Rosey Meade Thorn. She recorded in her personal journal that Rosey was always an ill child. At the age of 14, Rosey died.
