I am Pongo the Racing Dalmatian. I want to run from cache to cache!! The purpose of this racing TB is to score the maximum points in the 2009 Great SA TB Race by moving as fast as possible through as many as possible caches over the largest distance up to the end of the race on 11 July 2010.

The rules of the race can be viewed at the page of the event cache where the race started: GC1QXCC. Information on the race is also available in the forum at Groundspeak>Geocaching Groups by Country>South Africa

About This Item

Pongo the Racing Dalmatian

I am the famous Disney black and white Dalmatian dog. Dalmatians are symmetrical, muscular medium-sized dogs with superior endurance. We have spots randomly splashed over our white bodies. Our spots are not always black, but can be black, brown (liver), lemon, dark blue, tri colored, brindled, solid white (highly discouraged in show dogs), or sable. Puppies are born completely white and the spots develop later.

There is total disagreement about the origin of our breed. Traces were found in Egyptian bas-reliefs and Hellenic friezes, so we are certainly an ancient breed. Since 1993 our roots are recognized as being from Croatia.

Dalmatians were bred to run under or along-side of horse-drawn carriages and therefore have a vast amount of stamina and energy. We became popular as a carriage dog in the 1800's. We trotted beside (and even among) the horses and then guarded the carriages and horses while our masters were occupied elsewhere.

The versatile Dalmatian has seen many uses e.g. as a mascot for firemen, war sentinel, circus performer, vermin hunter, hound, shepherd and guard dog. Today, this beautiful breed is primarily a companion dog. We are playful, happy-go-lucky, sensitive and loyal. Dalmatians need very firm and strong leadership and guidance from its human owner.

Now here is another use for a Dalmatian: This little Dalmatian is a racing dog taking part in the 2009 Great SA TB Race and I will appreciate it if you can speedily help me on my way in the Race.
