In June of 1604, Samuel de Champlain and Sieur Des MontÕs landed on St. Croix Island near the mouth of the St. Croix River within the present day city limits of Calais. With their companions they spent the winter there, creating the first European settlement on the North American continent north of Florida, and founding the French colony of Acadia.
The international significance of this event cannot be understated.
The island is the English equivalent of Plymouth Rock to those of French descent.
