Current Goal

This bug has been on some amazing adventures. In 2006, I obtained a grant for 50 travel bug tags so that all of my 4th graders could release a travel bug into the wild. They had to bring an object, and then write up a goal for their bug. As a class we added two explanatory paragraphs.

Unfortunately, many of the bugs went missing pretty quickly. The students knew to expect this, so we expressed sadness at those that were lost, but continued watching those that kept traveling.

At one point, I decided to recycle some that I was notified of that were not found in caches or that the cache itself had disappeared. This bug was one of those, so I erased all of its logs.I was going to release something new, but for some reason or another, this one was never used.

Last year (2015), almost a decade later, I get a box at school. It actually was addressed to "Any 4th Grade Classroom," so as team leader I opened it. Inside was the long lost travel bug and a note that simply read "Found in the Colorado Rocky Mountains near Tin Cup." No return address or signature to let me know who the kind geocacher was that saw fit to return the bug to its place of birth.

I couldn't decide what to do with the bug, and placed it back in the box and took it home to contemplate. It got packed in some geocaching things in a box and I forgot about it.....until today....July 25, 2016. I'm going to take it to school this year and share it with my new 2nd graders. We'll take photos, I'll let them decide what it's new mission will be, and it will travel once again.

THANK YOU again, kind geocacher. I hope you have this on your watchlist!

I am dropping this trackable today, after it has travelled with me for a bit. I'm leaving it in Leiden, and I'm including a couple of pictures that should give you some idea of historical sites in the city of Leiden. Think of it as a very tiny guided tour. Hopefully soon people will be able to visit again in person. Keep staying positive, testing negative, and happy travels!

  • Mural with poem In the city of Leiden there are over 120 murals with poems in many, many different languages. This was the very first one that was painted on a wall. A new project also added murals of famous physics formulae in the city.

  • The academic building This former Abbey is one of the few religious buildings that survived the 80-year war with Spain. It now is the epicenter of Leiden University, and looks out over our 426-year-old botanical garden. Last year, in memory of the 400th anniversary of the pilgrim fathers leaving Leiden for the Americas, there was an exhibition of plants that early settlers took back with them to Europe.
  • Buried pilgrims While living in exile in Leiden, some of the family members of the Pilgrim Fathers died. They were buried here, in the Pieterskerk (St. Peter's Church), the place where Leiden University was founded about half a century earlier.
  • In memory of Rev. John Robinson
  • Suitcase Throughout the city, suitcases like this one are placed in front of houses where Jews hid from the Nazis during the second world war, or in front of buildings from where the Nazis coordinated their search for them. They symbolise the baggage of that history that we carry with us.
  • The coldest place on earth This is the building where Heike Kamerlingh Onnes managed to liquify Helium in 1908, thus creating the coldest place on earth there, and discovered superconductivity three years later.
  • Snellius' triangulation This is the place where Willebrord Snel van Royen (Snellius) first performed triangulation, a technique that is still used by geocachers today (for example: in JaVaWa).
  • De vliet This is where the Mayflower set sail in 1620. The sculpture is placed in a garden that grows vegetables and herbs that the pilgrims took with them to the Americas hoping to grow plants for food, medicines, dyes, etc.
  • William Brewster alley This is where William Brewster lived.
