To celebrate all things geocaching! To meet cool cachers, to travel to great events, and to bring cachers to the nearest "must see" cache - because if it is a "must see" cache then you need to see it!
The first stash (a bucket partially buried underground on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon) was placed by Dave Ulmer on May 3rd 2000; by May 6th, two readers of the USENET newsgroup where it was announced had found it and logged it. Here is a brief description from two weeks later as geocaching was being born:
The Global Positioning Stash Hunt (GPSH) is an entertaining adventure game
for gps users. Participating in a stash hunt is a good way to take advantage
of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic plan is to
have individuals and organizations set up stashes all over the world and
share the locations of these stashes on the internet. GPS users can then use
the location coordinates to find the stashes. Once found, a stash may provide
the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is
that if they take something from the stash, they should try to leave something
for the stash.
Please try to keep this coin moving. If for any reason you have this coin for more than a couple weeks without being able to move it, would you please leave a note here so Crossmage knows the coin is still travelling?
