Visited 9/15/2011 me N u took it to THE SEA OF BIRDS 2 Saudi Arabia - 139.69 miles  Visit Log

    Visited during a maintenance check.

The sea of birds cache is located close to the Riyadh river - which is actually the waste water from Riyadh which flows down Wadi Hanifa before petering out in the desert, the cache gets its name as there is a bird ringing project not far away, the area is a haven for migratory birds in the cooler months.

    • Funny looking birds!
Visited 6/30/2011 me N u took it to John Brown`s Rock 2 Saudi Arabia - 18.48 miles  Visit Log

Another visit for this TB - we placed this cache after the original had been archived by the owners (who are no longer in Saudi Arabia) due to 2 previous containers going missing but we think it is a worthwhile site to have a cache.

It is a rock outcrop on which petroglyphs (rock carvings) dating back about 3,000 years can be found, the carvings portray animals now locally extinct, such as Oryx, ibis, Giraffe, Ostrich and even a lion, human figures and examples of early writing.

Visited 6/30/2011 me N u took it to SABATEAN WRITING (Massif, West of Riyadh) Saudi Arabia - 3,197.54 miles  Visit Log

This cache is close to a site with inscriptions dating from the 6th century AD commemorating an expedition by the kings of Saba, Hadramaut and Yemen to subdue a local tribe who were attacking Yemeni forts in the area - the forts were guarding a water supply as this was the trade route from the South.

One of the inscriptions carries a date of 516AD.

Once again a seldom visited cache (we actually replaced it) in an amazing area hence the visit log.

Welcome to the Arabian shield - which marks the joining of 2 different geological formations, to the East is sandstone and limestone but West from here can be seen pre-Cambrian volcanic rocks which stretch across to the Red sea coast some 800Kms (500 miles away.

Craggy volcanic hills dot the scenery here instead of the mix of rolling sand dunes and flat rocky plains.

We decided not to drop off It`s a bugs life as this is a rarely visited cache - only 8 visits in 5 years, but a good place to see.

Visited 6/9/2011 me N u took it to Wadi Al-Shawki Saudi Arabia - 3,179.27 miles  Visit Log

    Welcome to Saudi Arabia.

Our 1st caching day out since returning from holiday and a FTF too.

We did not leave "Its a bugs life" in the cache as, although we were 1st to find the cache was placed on 23 February 2007 so its not very busy.
