About This Item

We found this geocoin in a geocache. Though it had not been activated, its protective cover requested that it go east from Oregon, so we named this geocoin 'Morgenlandfahrt', the title of a book by Hermann Hesse that is usually translated as "Journey to the East".

German author Hermann Hesse was fascinated with the idea of Buddhist Enlightenment. One of his most famous books, which is related to 'Die Morgenlandfahrt', is Siddhartha, which deals with the spiritual journey of Siddhartha during the time of the Buddha. We thought this was a fitting theme for a Buddhist/Celtic themed geocoin that brings together East and West:

"This beautiful Dharmachakra geocoin depicts symbology from Buddhism and Celtic culture. The term Dharmachakra means ‘wheel of law’, and is representative of Buddhist teachings regarding the cycle of rebirth. The front of this coin has eight spokes within the wheel, representing the spiritual Noble Eightfold path.

Four of the eight spokes are represented by colored dots representing three important symbols of Buddhism: Buddha, Darma, and the Sangha. The center has a lotus flower representing the soul’s progress that Buddhist practitioners continually work to achieve on their path to enlightenment.

The backside of this coin shows an endless knot, which has many meanings. The two most prevalent interpretations discuss the intertwining of wisdom and compassion or the endless and timeless nature of our existence.

Both sides of the coin have a Celtic knot on the outer border. This knot is also endless, and interpretation can take many different meanings. Often, because it is noted that there is no beginning or end on this knot, we are reminded of an uninterrupted life cycle."

The German name 'das Morgenland' is a word for the Orient. A literal translation would be 'Morning Land', namely the place where the sun rises in the morning. The opposite is 'das Abendland', or 'Evening Land', which is the Occident. We will try to take this coin East some time soon, perhaps starting in 'das Abendland' somewhere in Iceland or the Faroe Islands, which we are visiting in early July.
