Apollo 13
Apollo 13
was the seventh manned mission in the American Apollo space program and the third intended to land on the Moon. The craft was launched on April 11, 1970, at 13:13 CST from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, but the lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded two days later, crippling the service module upon which the Command Module depended. Despite great hardship caused by limited power, loss of cabin heat, shortage of potable water, and the critical need to jury-rig the carbon dioxide removal system, the crew returned safely to Earth on April 17.
The flight was commanded by James A. Lovell with John L. "Jack" Swigert as Command Module pilot and Fred W. Haise as Lunar Module pilot. Swigert was a late replacement for the original CM pilot Ken Mattingly, who was grounded by the flight surgeon after exposure to German measles

Thanks for visiting. I can't think of a better place to put an explorer from France.
Ribault later settled Ft Caroline in FL, which was attacked by the Spanish from a temporary base in Saint Augustine. They spared no one, including Ribault. Many of the individuals were murdered near Saint Augustine near an area named Matanzas Bay (massacre bay), which has kept the name to this day.

Couldn't get you to the space side of things but since we are on the topic of explorers, I took a different vein. Ribault established the first European settlement in North America (other than some earlier Vikings), so the history of Jamestown or Saint Augustine being the oldest settlements aren't quite accurate. The celebrated Virginia Dare, the purported first European born in North America was actually late by 50 + years. Of course, if the US celebrated Thanksgiving based on French wine making Huguenots instead of English bible reading Puritans, it would be ALOT more fun.
