Canberra is the capital city of Australia. As 2013 is Canberra's Centenary I want to celebrate my BIG 100 by visiting as much of Australia as possible and travel to other capital cities around the world.
This is 6 in a series of 11 travel bugs being released to celebrate my very special birthday.
Please keep me going on my travels.
Number 6 in this Canberra Centenary series is a key ring showing the National Library of Australia building.
The origins of the National Library of Australia go back to the early years after Australian Federation in 1901, when the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library served both Federal Parliament and the nation. In 1927 the Library was moved from Melbourne to Canberra with the relocation of Parliament.
An Act of Parliament in 1960 formally separated the National Library from the Parliamentary Library and a new building for the National Library’s growing collections and services was opened on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin, Canberra in August 1968.
With its elegant classical lines, the building is a tribute to the vision of architects Bunning and Madden and includes important contributions from renowned artists Henry Moore, Tom Bass and Leonard French. The Library is a landmark building in Canberra’s Parliamentary Triangle and the principal storehouse of Australia’s documentary heritage.
The foundation stone was laid by Sir Robert Menzies on 31 March 1966. He wanted “something with columns” and while the architects obliged with unmistakeable references to the Parthenon in Athens, they were aware of more contemporary trends.
Prior to 1901 Australia was a country made up of independent states, who all agreed by referendum to federate and become a single nation, with a new National Capital City.
"In 2013, we celebrate 100 years since Lady Denman, wife of then Governor-General Lord Denman, stood upon the newly laid Foundation Stones and announced that the name of the new Australian capital would be Canberra.
The Centenary of Canberra is an opportunity for all Australians to celebrate this momentous occasion in our country’s history and to explore the many facets–local, regional, national and international–of our nation’s capital. This city tells the story of our country's freedom, spirit, achievements and aspirations." - Source : Canberra 100 website
