Current Goal

My mission is to travel around the United Kingdom raising awareness of http://www.alexhulmefoundation.co.uk before arriving at a geocache near M33 4EZ in Sale, Manchester, (the home town of Alex Hulme) so that I can begin a new adventure.

About This Item

AHF has been released to raise awareness of http://www.alexhulmefoundation.co.uk/. The foundation was set up in memory of a very brave young man, Alex Hulme, to raise funds for research into B-Cell Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma which sadly claims the lives of many people like Alex.

Despite his young age, Alex Hulme was known to many people and endeared himself to everyone with his fun, easy going and mature approach to life.

It came as a massive shock when in March 2011 Alex was diagnosed B-Cell Non Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL). Throughout his treatment Alex was very brave and positive doing all that was asked of him, believing he would be rewarded with a full recovery.

Unfortunately, despite his treatment working well in the early stages, Alex's cancer returned in late June and although he responded well again, he lost his six month battle and left us on September 5th 2011 aged just twelve years of age.

Alex’s family soon discovered that, due to the relatively low number of cases each year of NHL in children and the reasonably high treatment success rate, currently 83%, NHL isn’t seen as a high priority for funding therefore, it has been largely non-existent in the past.

As a consequence the Alex Hulme Foundation was formed as a legacy to Alex in recognition of the courage and bravery he showed during his illness but also because he would want to help others who found themselves in the same position as he did. Through donations made to the Foundation, it aims to improve research into and the treatment of this dreadful disease and thus providing diagnosed children with a better prognosis for the future.

Thanks to the support of so many wonderful people the Foundation is now funding a pioneering research project run by Dr. Suzanne Turner, the only Paediatric Lymphoma Researcher in the UK. The work is focusing on the causes of NHL and the development of individualised treatment plans that provide children better outcomes in life.
