Current Goal

Dank.

We chose a donkey because as habitants of Schaerbeek we have the nickname: ‘donkey’
We would like him to travel as much as possible from cache to cache.

Please post a picture of the environment in which it is placed. Thank you.

About This Item

As early as the time of the Crusades Schaerbeek was famous for the breeding of donkeys (in 1786 there were 1,158 counted).
In the village used to live many farmers and agriculters who sold their products on the market in Brussels.
Since 1136 the Schaerbeek millers had been authorized by the Duke of Brabant to enter Brussels by donkeys loaded with sacks of flour to supply the city.
After this periode, each morning, a caravan of heavily loaded donkeys  entered Schaerbeek through the ‘Ezelsweg’ (‘Donkeyway’),  Presently called ‘Josaphatstreet’ - entering the market of Brussels -.
When the Brussels housewives saw them, they cried out: "The donkeys of Schaerbeek are there!"
By identifing the donkey drivers and their animals with each other, the habitants of Schaerbeek got the nickname donkeys.  And from then on, Schaerbeek was called: "Donkey Town"
