This is a simple two-stage multi, with a bit of math to arrive at the final.
But first...
Let me share with you a fascinating story about a local schoolteacher, Millicent Milroy, and her relationship with the Duke of Windsor (Edward VIII).
Milli was born in Galt in 1890, and went to school there. She became a schoolteacher, and would go on to teach in Lambton Mills, Malton, northern Ontario and then Rockwood for some 35 years.
Edward VIII was apparently quite an irresponsible playboy. After World War I, he came to enjoy Canada and spent a great deal of time here.
On one of his visits, in 1919, he stayed at the Iroquois Hotel in Galt (which burned down in 1974) and met Millicent through her father, James Milroy.
It was the start of a love affair that would last for years.
Edward purchased a farm outside Calgary, and lived there for several years. Millicent joined him there, where she claimed they were secretly married and had two children, Edward and Andrew.
At some point, Milli moved back to Rockwood, and Edward back to England.
When his father, George V, died in 1936, Edward became King of England, but his reign lasted only 325 days and he was never officially crowned. He chose to give up the throne after his plan to marry Wallis Simpson - a divorcee from New York - was met with fierce opposition from the British government and the Church of England. George VI, who was Queen Elizabeth II's father, became King and Edward was created Duke of Windsor. He later served as governor of the Bahamas and died in exile in France at the age of 78, in 1972.
Upon his death, Milli had the tombstone at Mount View Cemetery engraved to read:
Millicent Milroy A.M.M.M. St. P
Daughter of James and Helen Milroy,
1890 — 1985
Wife of Edward VIII,
Duke of Windsor
1894 - 1972
(Of course, the '1985' was engraved after her own death, some 13 years later).
Due to this, she received widespread media attention. She maintained that she had entered into a morganatic marriage – a legal union between a member of the royal family and a commoner, with the agreement that the wife and any offspring would have no claim on the husband's estate or title.
When asked for proof of her marriage, Milli said that the Duke had taken the pictures, records and mementos of the event with him back to England.
She did claim to have documents in a family Bible, proving her relationship with Edward was real, and that these would be made public after her death. But after her death in 1985 at age 95, her home was broken into and the Bible and any documents it contained were stolen.
…so the question arises: Did Milli really have a morganatic marriage to Edward, or was this just in the imagination of a crazy old spinster?
