I had to get up very early because Nilpferd wanted to start a long hike right at sunrise.
But I will not complain after I saw that the sun was shining today after yesterday's rain.
First we climbed Mt. Bründlingsköpfl, a rather unknown summit and then we went to Mt. Hochfelln. Here were a lot of people because there is a cable car up there. It quickly became clear that it was not possible to find the cache at the summit without being observed by the masses of people.
We ignored the cache and followed the ridge to Mt. Strohnkopf on a narrow and challenging path, where we only met a few hikers.
Then it was a steep and slippery descent and on the way back we found a cache after all.
We were back at the car one hour before sunset and as the weather forecast for the next forenoon was good, we decided to spend another night at the same place.

  • Nobody else at Mt. Bründlingsköpfl
  • Mt. Hochfelln, our next destination
  • This is the "path" to Mt. Strohnkopf
  • Snow-covered mountains in Austria
  • In the background Lake Chiemsee

It was still raining on Tuesday, but the weather forecast for Wednesday and Thursday was good.
As the days are getting shorter and shorter, the plan was to drive to the starting point of the planned hike already on Tuesday afternoon and spend the night there in Nilpfed’s little camper so that we could start the hike right at sunrise on Wednesday.
Once we had found a suitable place to spend the night, we noticed that there was a T4 cache just 50 meters away. It had the mysterious name 60-60-200.
The location was easy to find. A kind of pipe made of cement with the dimensions 60 cm x 60 cm and 200 cm deep.
200 centimeters is not really deep, but the walls were wet, without steps and quite slippery.
Going down to the bottom seemed easy, but how does Nilpferd get out again?
But he had an idea: He has had a tow rope in his car for decades and has never needed it. Today it was used for the first time.
So he went back to the car, got the rope and tied it around a tree.
So Nilpferd had something to hold on in order to pull himself out of the hole. And fortunately it worked really well!

  • The cache is 200 centimeters just below us

The weather forecast announced on Friday that Sunday would be the better day of the weekend, but looking out of the window this morning it was clear that it would be better to start immediately to the mountains, because the weather situation looked like „Föhn“. This is a warm wind blowing from the south (Italy) over the Alps. In Italy the clouds accumulate in front of the high mountains and it rains, but here on the northern side of the Alps we have blue sky, no rain, a clear view and only a few white clouds.
In retrospect, it was a good decision to make the hike already today and we enjoyed climbing Mt. Teufelstättkopf (1758m above sea-level) in best weather conditions.

  • Nameless pond
  • Fuller’s Teasel
  • A chapel on the way to the summit
  • Typical „Föhn“-clouds over Mt. Teufelstättkopf
  • Climbing to the summit of Mt. Teufelstättkopf
  • Blue sky and white clouds

Just back from the north we are hiking again in Bavaria. And again there is something to celebrate. Exactly 20 years ago here Nilpferd found his first cache. It was a FTF at Mt. Brunnenkopf in the Ammergauer Mountains close to Linderhof Castle.
The cache is already archived since a long time, but Nilpferd wanted to do the hike again today.
The hut near the summit is already closed since last weekend and therefore we couldn’t buy a beer, but we were all alone at the summit.
We also saw the first tiny snowfields, but that’s quite normal for October in this area.

  • Here Nilpferd found his first cache 20 years ago
  • Soon we are at the summit
  • Nobody else was at the summit
  • View to Mt. Klammspitze

A hike in the Palatine Forest.
The red sandstone is typical for this area and therefore all the rocks are red here.
The path was mostly unmarked and a lot of trees had fallen across it.
On the way we saw an old construction from 1841 where water was dammed up. The water then was led into a canal and the tree trunks felled in the forest were transported with it.

  • The path no longer is in good condition
  • Here the water was dammed up
  • Fly Agaric
  • Red sandstone, typical for Palatinate.
