This cache location has an interesting history.
It started as a prison farm in the mid 1800s and the prisoners grew their own food. I suspect they ate a lot healthier than todays inmates!
By the turn of the last century, the state prison had been moved to Reidsville and the lush, fertile lowland (swamp) was converted into a landfill which was closed around WWI. Until the state and county took an archaeological interest, this was a Mecca for bottle collectors.
Today, the Botanical Garden, Hospice, Police Maintenance and other county services sit upon ground once irrigated with the sweat of those challenged by mutually respectful social intercourse.
