Retrieve It from a Cache 9/19/2025 Nilpferd retrieved it from Abisko Norrbotten, Sweden   Visit Log

The weather forecast for the Norwegian coast doesn't promise anything good. We fled towards the interior of the country and once again reached Sweden, which is not so far away.
The landscape is completely different again: huge autumnal yellow birch forests and red blueberry bushes that still bear fruit. Delicious!

  • Farewell to the island of Senja with a rainbow
  • Autumnal blueberry bushes and birch forests
  • Ascent to Mt. Nuolja
  • First snowfields at an altitude of 580 m

One last hike on the island of Senja before the weather here turns really bad.
We didn't find the cache, but we did find a lot of debris from an American plane (C-130 Herkules) that took part in the NATO exercise “Winter Express” on March 20, 1966 and crashed on the mountain here in bad weather.

  • Quite cloudy today
  • The debris of the American plane
  • Remains of the electronics
  • Almost 60 years old

Today we followed a recommendation we got yesterday from the nice Norwegian lady.
And the fact that the cache at Mt. Litjebrusen hasn't been visited for over a year shows that it must be a pretty lonely peak.
We continued to Mt. Husfjellet, where a few more people were on the trail.
Great weather and a great view to the many small islands and the Devil's Teeth. That's the name of some imposing mountain peaks. I wouldn't want to be bitten by this devil!
And once again, the path was quite muddy in parts. And the wooden planks were not always lying where we needed them.

We spent the night at a campsite for a change.
The laundry had to be washed again and my Nilpferd needed a shower.

  • Many small islands
  • View of the Devil's Teeth
  • The Devil's Teeth
  • Husfjellet summit. We were on the peak in the left third of the picture!
  • That makes dirty feet. The planks lie too far behind
  • It's better done here
  • Sunset at the campsite

We drove a little further and are now on the island of Senja on the west coast of Norway. Everything is a little more adventurous here: the roads are narrow, the mountains steep, and the road tunnels poorly illuminated. And, of course, there is only one lane. There is little traffic here, and no one is coming the other way. Only when Nilpferd wants to drive through the tunnel there is traffic coming the other way. Even though it was only a short distance, Nilpferd was not amused driving backwards in the narrow tunnel in semi-darkness to the next passing place.
Today's mountain tour took us to Mt. Hesten, which offers a great view to Mount Senja. It is only 639 meters above sea-level and drops vertically to the sea on the west side. And the north side, which can be seen from Mt. Hesten, is not much flatter.
In various YouTube videos, the mountain is considered as unclimbable, but since the cache at the summit only has a T rating of 3.5, that can't be right. So we tried it this afternoon: from the south side. It's a steep but not really difficult ascent.
At the summit, we met a nice Norwegian woman who recommended a few more hikes to us.

  • View back where we started our hike
  • The north side of Mt. Segla
  • TBs in front of Mt. Segla
  • Nilpferd at the same place
  • One of the 1000 fjords
  • At the summit of Mt. Segla
  • View from Mt. Segla to Mt. Hesten

A week has passed since we were at the North Cape.
We were lucky with the weather and were able to hike every day.
We are now just 200 km south of the North Cape.
There was a lot to see: waterfalls, a mountain that can be reached via a staircase with 1,002 steps, the biggest canyon in Northern Europe and a glacier. The glacier is only 450 metres above sea level. That is 150 metres lower than the village where Nilpferd lives.
But the absolute highlight was visible at night. We saw the northern lights (aurora borealis) and even took a photo of them.

  • The mountain with 1,002 steps
  • Half time: step number 501
  • Northern lights!
  • Orvvosfossen waterfall
  • Break at the waterfall
  • And another waterfall
  • The largest canyon in Northern Europe
  • Pit toilet suitable for winter
  • At the glacier
  • Only 450 meters above sea level
