Goodbye ## TRAVEL BUG EPIC RACE ## - O Surfista, it’s time to let you go. Lunch with my friend who I’ve known the longest today. Keeping very lucky with the weather in Melbourne so you could sit outside with us before dropping you into a cache in Rosanna, a north eastern suburb of Melbourne, and a few stops further out than where my in-laws live. Rosanna is known for its beautiful parklands, big homes, and leafy streets. There was a real life gecko in the cache so that was cool (Marbled Gecko, Christinus marmoratus). Good luck! 🦎

Back with Mother Wombat in Werribee, a south western suburb of Melbourne mid way between Melbourne and Geelong. Werribee was established as an agricultural settlement in the 1850s, originally named Wyndham and later renamed Werribee (derived from the Aboriginal name meaning "backbone" or "spine") in 1904. The suburb is situated on its namesake, the Werribee River. You enjoyed the beautiful weather by taking a walk along the river. ☀️

Back in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for you. You are in Alphington, home of my in-laws. The area has some lovely revegetated wetlands abutting the Yarra River, and includes the disused modification to the river bank once referred to as the Alphington Swimming Pool. 🦆

You went on a caching mission to Werribee Gorge State Park with ConnieandRick today. The 200m deep gorge was formed about a million years ago when movements along a fault in the Earth's crust steepened the river's gradient. Since then the Werribee River has continued to deepen the gorge through underlying rock to ancient sediments deposited in a sea more than 400 million years ago. 🥾

Today is Mothers Day so I picked up Mother Wombat and took her on a “surprise” outing to celebrate. I’m not sure what she imagined we were going to do but I’m sure it didn’t involve climbing over barbed wire, dodging snakes, and clambering under a bridge that featured in the original Mad Max movie. She can’t say that she didn’t get a surprise!
The bridge was the location of the biker/bridge wipeout scene if you are a Mad Max fan and the road featured in several other scenes. Since Mother Wombat clearly didn’t appreciate her surprise, I appeased her by taking her to lunch and visiting the abandoned Goldrush town of Steiglitz in the Brisbane Rangers, 80km west of Melbourne. 🥷🏻

Melbourne is located on the calm waters of Port Phillip Bay and many of the suburbs stretch around the bay on either side. You travelled to one of them in the west for a CCE today. In the 1830s, the then township of Williamstown was initially considered along with the sites that became known as Geelong and Melbourne for the capital of the new colony at Port Phillip. Although Williamstown offered excellent proximity to anchorage, Melbourne was ultimately chosen due to its abundance of fresh water. 🚰

You are helping me do a spot of house hunting while I’m home and my search took me to Brunswick, a suburb close by the University of Melbourne. Traditionally a working class area noted for its large Italian and Greek communities, Brunswick is currently known for its bohemian culture and strong arts and live music scenes. 👨🏻🎤

Welcome to Australia! You’ve landed in my real home city, Melbourne, now the largest city in Australia. I’m not sure that’s a good thing. The area of Melbourne has been home to Aboriginal Victorians for over 40,000 years and serves as an important meeting place for local Kulin nation clans. During the 1850s Victorian gold rush, the city entered a lengthy boom period that, by the late 1880s, had transformed it into one of the world's largest and wealthiest metropolises. 🇦🇺

Time to find your passport but first we had a day of caching in Auckland. We went here there and everywhere, including getting Auckland Council to give us the gate codes to drive up One Tree Hill so our mobility impaired team member could enjoy the great 360 degree view from the top. Along the way, we found a big NZ filled with Buzzy Bees - a popular toy in New Zealand. It’s a pull-along bee with rotating wings that make a clicking noise. My kids loved their Buzzy Bee and it’s still stashed away somewhere. 🐝
