SnowWolf Geocoin - Front

Don't keep this coin - it is not a trade item!

This is a copy of my SnowWolf geocoin that was lost or stolen. The original coin was sent out to travel, but went missing. It has been missing for well over a year, so I made this copy coin to travel in its place. Hopefully, the replacement coin will last longer and travel more than the original did.

My kids and I are eager to see where this coin will travel. Take it to snow, ice, freezers... anywhere it is COLD!

Log it out of the cache you found it in, then place it in another cache and log it in there. I would like as many cachers as possible to be able to see and enjoy this coin.

Another trip back to the Gold Coast Skydivers dropzone; this time to make a memorial skydive. Last year shortly after competition the high school robotics team I work with experienced an awful tragedy. Omar, one of our team students was lost to us in the waters near Ship Island. Omar was a great kid, was very well liked, was smart, and had quite a sense of humor. He was missed terribly this year. I know I thought about him often as we were meeting, designing and building the robot, and competing. In honor of Omar, the team tee shirts we wore to competition were made in his favorite color. The team selected the phrase "Fly High Omar" and had it printed on the tee shirt sleeve, as well as on wrist bands and pens that we handed out at the competition.

Now that the competition season is over, in keeping with the "Fly High Omar" theme, I decided to make a skydive in honor of Omar's memory. I wore the team tee shirt and the team wrist band, drove to the Gold Coast Skydivers drop zone in Lumberton, went up to 14,500 feet, and jumped. This was just my way of acknowledging a great kid who was taken from us much too soon.

Fly High, Omar! You are missed.

One more thing from the Huntsville FIRST Robotics Competition... Several sponsoring companies had booths set up at the competition to tell the students about their companies, job opportunities, scholarships, and internships, etc.

I was shocked to find Wyp Aviation there. I had seen them before on YouTube. This is the company that's developing a "sky wing" that a person can strap onto their feet and fly around behind a towing aircraft. The owner of the company and developer of the wing was there talking to the students. His concept is based on a Disney cartoon that my kids loved when they were little. "Tailspin" was the name of the cartoon and it was about a bear family in the flying business. The little bear cub would at times get out of the plane and get towed behind on a sky board.

Since I'm a skydiver, this really appealed to me. The owner discussed the technical details and problems he's been solving. He had the prototype on display, which is a scaled-down version that uses a robotic person he developed. It has actually flown behind a radio controlled plane. He says he's working a full scale version with a human pilot and is talking to skydivers. I'm looking forward to the day when I might be able to give it a try.

  • The Wyp owner and his prototype wingboard. Not only did he develop the wingboard and its towing system, but he designed and built the remote control robotic rider too.
  • Prototype wingboard. Strap it on and fly around behind an airplane.  Sounds like fun! The inventor has hand controls for the ailerons. Up and down is controlled by the rider shifting his weight forward or back on the wing.

During breaks between matches at the robotic competition I had time to go out and do some quick geocaching. I hadn't realized how beautiful Huntsville is. There was a large park, and a stream running through the city with lots of pools and fountains. Wish I could have spent more time here.

It's always fun to see all the inventive ways the various teams design their robots to handle the challenges. Some teams come up with very efficient and elegant solutions. Other teams, not so much. The Petal High team didn't do so well this year. When our robot was weighed, it was too heavy so we had to remove some of the implements we designed. We also had problems with the robot breaking. Getting over some of the obstacles was very physically abusive on the robots this year, and our robot apparently wasn't built sturdy enough. We broke a custom wheel hub we had made, then broke one of the drive shafts, then we broke both of the drive shafts in another match, then stripped out the gear motor on one of our robotic arm's joints. We ended up coming in 39th out of 52 robots. Not our best year, but not our worst year either. We've made it into the quarter finals and semi finals in the past. We'll try again to do better next year.

I wish we had done better. This year's robot was dedicated to Omar, one of the students from last year's team who drowned in the Gulf of Mexico at the end of the summer. He was swimming with another robot team member at an island off the Mississippi coast when they were caught in a strong current and swept away. One student managed to swim to a channel marker buoy and hang on until he was rescued, but Omar was lost. Very sad. The team printed bracelets and pens with the phrase "Fly High Omar" on them and handed them out at the competition. The team tee shirt this year was done in Omar's favorite color and also had the phrase printed on the sleeve.

The SnowWolf geocoin attended the robot competition and witnessed the ingenuity and good sportsmanship of the teams. Several teams donated parts when our robot was broken to help us get repaired and get back out competing in the matches. It was a very good experience for the kids and it really piqued their interest in science and technology.

  • Repairing a broken drive shaft. Slamming into and bouncing over obstacles took its toll on the robot. We broke a wheel hub, a drive shaft, a gear motor on our two-jointed arm, then broke both drive shafts in the same match. The robot wouldn't move; it just sat there and quivered.
  • Ready to go again after repairs. Launching over the "Rough Terrain" obstacle.  We had to hit it pretty hard and fast to get over it without getting stuck. It eventually caused us to break again.

Team Hero, team number 2190 from Petal High School in Petal Mississippi, competed in the Rocket City Regional of the FIRST Robotics Competition in Huntsville, Alabama Thursday through Saturday. "FIRST" stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology" and is a high school robotics program started around twelve years ago by Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway, to foster interest in science, technology, and engineering in kids. Sam and I have been mentors with the Petal High School team for ten years now. Sam and I are electrical engineers, but we had Darren, William, and Andy helping out with mechanical design and construction this year.

Every year early in January the FIRST organization reveals what the competition will be for the year. Each year has different goals, rules, and challenges. Once the game is revealed the schools have just six weeks to design, build, and program their robot to meet the challenges within the financial, size, and weight restrictions set forth in the rules.

This year's game was very interesting. It was a medieval theme. At each end of a rectangular playing field was a castle tower with high window openings and low door openings. One of the goals of the game was for the robots to pick up grey foam balls ("boulders") and shoot them into the windows and doors of the opponents' castle tower to earn points. Also, near the center of the playing field were two rows of obstacles, or "defenses", that extended all the way across the field. There were several to choose from: drawbridge, portcullis, sallie port (a swing gate), rough terrain, moat, rock wall, low bar, and cheval de frise (three teeter-totters side by side). Each team chose which defenses they wanted to use against their opponent for each match. Teams earned points by successfully crossing the other team's defenses. Each match started with an "autonomous" period when the robots operated on their own according the the computer program that the teams wrote for their robots. After autonomous, the tele-op period started. Students would step up to control stations and control their robots for the remainder of the match. At the end, if the robot could hook onto a bar high up on the opponent's tower and hoist itself two feet off the floor before the match ended, additional points were awarded.

  • The Team Hero (2190) robot, ready to compete. We used six big pneumatic wheels this year to help us climb over the different defenses our opponents could put in our way.
  • The front of the robot, showing the ball shooter. We built a strong shooter for the foam "boulders" using counter-rotating knurled wheels above and below the ball in a chute.  Two more wheels load the ball into the shooter, then feed it into the rapidly spinning shooter wheels.  Pow!
  • The robot drive team in the pits before a match. These guys operated the robot once the autonomous part of the match was over.  One drove the bot, two others operated switches for various motors and actuators, and one was a forward spotter guiding them.
  • Going over an obstacle in autonomous mode. At the beginning of each match, the robot acted on its own via a program written in C++.  In this match, the robot launched itself over the opponent's "Ramparts" defense.  We got extra points for crossing the defense in autonomous.

  • Capturing the enemy's tower with our teammates. At the end of the match, if all three robots in the alliance (team) could park on the sloped "batter" at the base of the enemy's tower, the tower was "captured" and extra points were awarded.  We were assigned different random teammates each match.
  • Our score in match 15. Team 2190 is ranked ninth! Team 2190 and our alliance partners won this match 115 to 85!  At this time in the competition Team Hero 2190 was ranked in 9th place out of 52 robots.

Okay, so my friend and co-worker, Sam, and I (Greg) finished up at the Space Center and were hungry. We noticed there was a "Sam & Greg's" pizza place near the hotel. We just had to go there. We marched in and announced to the workers in the pizza place that we were Sam & Greg. They were very unimpressed. But, we ordered a pizza anyway. It was pretty good and then we got some nice ladies to get a picture of us in front of the Sam & Greg's Pizza sign.

Robot competition starts in the morning! That's what we came all this way for. The Space Center and Sam & Greg's pizza were just a bonus.

Time for this geocoin to take a trip over to Huntsville, Alabama to participate in a robotics competition. But since we're going to Huntsville, why not get there early and visit the U.S. Space and Rocket Center at One Tranquility Base and see all the big rockets and space artifacts up close? Well, that's just what we did. I had been here before, but many years ago when my daughters were young. When you're away from them for a while you forget just how massive and powerful these rockets were. I remember watching the Saturn and Apollo launches and the lunar landings on TV with my family when I was a young boy, so it was very special to be reminded of those times and the amazing accomplishments that were achieved.

It's interesting to look at the progression in the rockets on display from the start of the space race until the moon landings and the shuttle missions. The most impressive thing on display though, was the huge Saturn V rocket. They have two full-sized Saturn V rockets on display here. One is a non-functioning full-scale model, but the other one was built identically to the rockets that actually flew into space. It was used for ground testing, and would have flown on the Apollo 19 mission if the Apollo program had continued. The five Rocketdyne F-1 rocket engines on the Saturn V each produced over 1.5 million pounds of thrust when they were fired. Total peak thrust from all five engines together was almost 8 million pounds. Hard to imagine!

Sam (one of the other robot team mentors) and I spent over two hours at the Space Center before going to get some supper and then meeting up with the rest of the robot team. Robot competition starts in the morning. Stay tuned!

  • Rockets at the US Space and Rocket Center. These are many of the rockets used in the space race as stepping stones to putting a man on the moon. The monstrous Saturn V rocket isn't here though. It gets a display pad all to itself.
  • The Saturn 1B rocket - Still not the biggest, baddest rocket on display here.
  • Saturn V rocket... The numbers are staggering. 363 ft tall. Empty, it weighed just 400,000 lbs. But it was loaded with over six million pounds of fuel (a form of kerosene, and liquid oxygen), most of which was burned up in less than three minutes during launch.
  • SnowWolf GC and the mighty F-1 rocket engine. One of five engines that powered the Saturn V's first stage.  Each engine produced over 1.5 million pounds of thrust, for a total of almost 8 million. They burned 5 million pounds of fuel in 165 seconds and boosted the rocket to over 5,000 mph.

Before this geocoin heads out to travel from cache to cache again, I had to take it to the Gold Coast Skydivers drop zone in Lumberton, Mississippi to initiate it into the world of skydiving. The winds were blowing really hard today so we only got one jump (a wingsuit skydive) before the plane got shut down and put on a weather hold. Now this geocoin has experienced the thrill, beauty, and joy of flight and knows why the birds sing. Next stop, the FIRST Robotics Competition in Huntsville, AL.
