Made it for a visit to Palmerston North airport PMR/NZPM after all!
While I was at the Butterflies at the Park cache ZK-MSY a Diamond DA40 Diamondstar owned by Massey University School of Aviation was doing takeoffs and landings, its takeoffs were very rapid and then it was too far away for a decent photo. By the time I got closer to the airport there was no sign of it, I since found out from Flightradar24 that it had been doing circuits further south. At least you could say some other flying was involved during my visit to the cache, namely from butterflies in the park ;-)
While I was at the park Air New Zealand ATR- 72-600 ZK-MZD arrived on flight NZ5176/ANZ176M from CHC/NZCH Christchurch : I had seen the plane on FlightRadar24, and heard it but couldn't observe it as it approached from the northeast and my location at the time was southeast of the airport. However it flew right overhead taking off on its return flight NZ5187/ANZ187M while I was at the Runway Lights cache, unfortunately at the time I was focused on extracting the log from the cache but I was able to catch a photo of the plane in the distance.
Unfortunately I DNF'ed a cache near the airport GC3XV2Q, The Lost Aeroplane as the cache has probably been disturbed by construction work- the "plane" is still there but I can't reveal any more without spoilers!
There were no aircraft movements by the time I got to the Unlimited Plane Spotting cache- would have been a great place to be earlier for the ATR landing.
As well as the photo of the ATR receding in the distance I am attaching photos of the welcome sign and the Control Tower. (I thought I had one of the School of Aviation but it didn't turn out!) I didn't make it to the terminal as I was running out of time and had other caches to do before catching a bus back to Wellington.
Weather forecast is not good for the next day or two but hopefully you will soon receive clearance for landing at NZWN. (The target cache I thought might be missing appears to be there after all, there have been recent finds.)
