Finland became an independent state on 6 December 1917. Starting in 1809 and up to independence, Finland formed an autonomous grand duchy in the Russian Empire. Before 1809, the area that is now Finland had been under Swedish rule since at least the 13th century.
Today, on 6 December 2017 we celebrate the independence and freedom and honour all those Finns who made it possible, especially those who gave their lives so that we can live in a free country.
