Spile

What is this funny thing? It's a SPILE. Spiles are used to tap sap out of a maple tree to make maple syrup. A hole is drilled into the tree and the small pointed end of the spile is hammered into the hole. The spout faces outward and a bucket is hung onto the spile to catch the sap as it drips out.

I picked up this interesting piece from Maui Rocks (GC11G7M). I treated it to some coconut syrup at breakfast and released it again before coming back to the mainland. Happy traveling!
