About This Item

1916 NJ Shark Attacks

While the Matawan attacks are the most widely-known today, this month of terror began in Beach Haven, 70 miles south of Matawan, and continued 6 days later in Spring Lake.  This travel bug is a tribute to the second victim of the Jersey Shore Shark Attacks, Charles Bruder, and the shore town of Spring Lake where that attack occurred.

Between July 1 and 12, 1916, five people were attacked by sharks along the Jersey Shore.  Only one victim survived.  The second attack occurred on July 6th in Spring Lake.  Twenty-seven year old Charles Bruder of Switzerland was a bell captain at Spring Lake's Essex & Sussex Hotel.  The attack occurred while Bruder was swimming 130 yards from shore.  Bruder bled so much that a woman reported to lifeguards that a canoe with a red hull had capsized.  Lifeguards in a rowboat rescued Bruder, but he died before the boat returned to shore.

Forgot to grab this friendly little fella that DEFINITELY WOULD COUNT AS SHARK TEETH in a scavenger hunt. 😁 I'll take him for a swim around NJ before finding a suitable home.
