I want to see Wildlife and Animals all over the World. Just don't keep me very long and don't put in the middle of a cache in wildness where are no visitors.

About This Item

Iceland, Yule Cat

The Yule Cat is a huge and vicious cat who is described as lurking about the snowy countryside during Christmas time and eating people who have not received any new clothes to wear before Christmas Eve. He is the house pet of Gryla and her sons.

Though referred to as an ancient tradition, written accounts of the Yule Cat have only been located as recently as the 19th century. The threat of being eaten by the Yule Cat was used by farmers as an incentive for their workers to finish processing the autumn wool before Christmas. The ones who took part in the work would be rewarded with new clothes, but those who did not would get nothing and thus would be preyed upon by the monstrous cat. The cat has alternatively been described as merely eating away the food of ones without new clothes during Christmas feasts. The perception of the Yule Cat as a man-eating beast was partly popularized by poems of Jóhannes úr Kötlum as with the rest of the folklore.

Cat in Icelandic is Köttur, but as Icelandic words take on different forms depending on the sentence, then it can also be Kött, Ketti, and Kattar. And in plural that's Kettir, Ketti, Köttum and Kattar. And then there are some other words such as Kisa (e. kittie) and Kettlingur (e. kitten). A tomcat is called Högni, and a female is called Læða.

Cats have been around in Iceland for centuries, or since Iceland was settled in 870. The Icelandic cat is closely related to cats from Skåne in Sweden, the Faroe Islands, and the Shetland Islands, but much more distantly related to the cat breeds in the rest of the United Kingdom. The cats in Iceland's countryside are more original breed than those in Reykjavík, that have bred with imported species.

Time to head back to Melbourne. You took the ferry across Port Philip Bay from Sorrento to Queenscliff. Ate our potato cakes on the top deck while watching the scenery go by. No dolphins were spotted escorting the boat. ⛴️

The family went for a hike at Cape Paterson. It’s the little seaside town of Wonthaggi and its big coal mine. It was one of the largest and most dangerous collieries in Australia. I like the coast and beaches at Cape Paterson much more than Inverloch. There are cliffs and lots of rockpools. 🦀

Brrrr, it’s a bit chilly at Inverloch, a town on the Gippsland Coast. The town sits on Anderson Inlet, a shallow estuary where the Tarwin River enters Bass Strait. It forms a 2,400 hectare almost-enclosed bay next to Inverloch, for which it provides a popular and protected beach. Our beach house is out of town on the wilder coast. Great when a storm rolls in. 🌊

Taking a trip to the family beach house at Inverloch. You stopped for lunch at Tooradin. A quick bit of caching and we were back on the road. 🥪

Visited 9/24/2023 Wombatwandering took it to Meet & Greet @ Melbourne Town Hall Victoria, Australia - 5.31 miles  Visit Log

Into central Melbourne for an early morning event near the Town Hall. Luckily I noticed that my train line was closed for track engineering before I headed to the station. I used to have my school end of year Speech Nights at the Melbourne Town Hall. 👩🏼‍🎓

Up to the in-laws. Went for a walk along popular Merri Creek (which is in suburban Melbourne) and met a tiger snake. That’s always exciting. Among the number of deaths caused by snakebite in Australia, those from tiger snakes are exceeded only by the brown snake. It was a reminder that caching in Australia is different to the UK. 🐍

Visited 9/21/2023 Wombatwandering took it to Colac Heritage Walk Victoria, Australia - 77.48 miles  Visit Log

Time to show CuteOtter more of Australia so you joined us on a day trip to Geelong and then across to Colac. The plains around Colac are the third largest volcanic plain in the world and the remnants of the extinct volcanoes make up the hills in the area. 🛣️

My friend and I are big Dim Sum fans and apparently Sunshine has one of Melbourne’s best dim sum places so out we headed. Pretty good. The town was originally called Braybrook Junction until 1907 when it was renamed Sunshine in honour of the Sunshine Harvester Works in 1907. The agricultural equipment maker was once the largest manufacturing plant in Australia. 🥟

Just taking it easy on another walk around Werribee. The name "Werribee" originated from the Victorian Aboriginal name for the Werribee River, Wirribi-yaluk in Wathawurrung and Boonwurrung - wirribi meaning "backbone" or "spine" and yaluk means stream. 🪃

CuteOtter and I took you for a walk along the beautiful Werribee River. It originates in the Wombat State Forest on the Great Dividing Range, and flows for about 110 kilometres south-east to the Port Phillip Bay. I’m yet to see a platypus here although there is meant to be some but there were plenty of birds today. 🦜
