A sad day for the geocaching community in greater London today. I took you to Croydon, south London, for the funeral of Sludge bucket. He was an early adopter of Geocaching and I always found his coordinates were spot on. Thanks Sludge bucket and we’ll all miss you at events. 😢

Wombatwandering took it to VS#1662 Charlton Village

We wandered out to a village called Charlton in Surrey, west of London. It’s dominated by the bank of the Queen Mary Reservoir, one of the largest of London's reservoirs supplying fresh water to London and parts of surrounding counties. I don’t think much happens here but the caches were excellent. 🚿

An early morning event in Hyde Park was the order of the day today. The drizzle held off until after it had finished. Hyde Park was established by Henry VIII in 1536 when he took the land from Westminster Abbey and used it as a hunting ground. It opened to the public in 1637. 🦌

Continuing my push for Wherigos, I headed to Chislehurst in far south east London. I was in Chislehurst once when both my husband and son called to say that work and school had been cancelled due to the start of Covid. Chislehurst is a lovely place and full of history. It was home to the Walsingham family (Francis was Elizabeth I’s spymaster), the exiled French Emperor, Napoleon III, Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney, after whole Sydney, Australia was named, and also the singer Siouxsie Sioux. 🫅

Tentmantent was passing through London from Lincoln so I took you to see him at an event in a pub. I’ve heard that this pub was the first gastro pub in London. It’s lucky to still be standing after a cacher accidentally set fire to the menu. 🔥

Started the day with another breakfast event in Bristol and then zipped over to Marshfield, Gloucestershire, for some lovely walking and challenge cache finding. Much better than yesterday. Then there was yet another event before the drive back toward London. 🥾

Wombatwandering took it to Sunday 4th Feb | Morning | Bristol county

South West England, United Kingdom

Continued your long weekend to the greater Bristol area and started the day with a breakfast event. Then it was off to battle muddy trails in the Charmy Down area, including an area of liquified mud and cow pooh where the farmer had put an electric fence across the footpath so we had to roll in the soupy muck to get under it. Unpleasant! During World War II, Charmy Down was used by the Royal Air Force and from 1943 by the United States Army Air Forces, primarily as a night fighter interceptor airfield. It was closed in 1946. 🐄

A long weekend away with some cachers to try and tick off a few counties. You’ve travelled to Chipping Sodbury in Gloucestershire to get the ball rolling. Edward Jenner, the pioneer of vaccination in the 18th century, started his medical training in Sodbury, observing people catching cowpox and then not catching smallpox. He lived in Melbourne House and was also a zoologist. Nice. 💉

This is the third time I’ve cleaned out the caches at Alexandra Palace in north London. Intended as "The People's Palace" and often referred to as "Ally Pally", Alexandra Palace’s purpose was a public centre of recreation, education and entertainment- North London's counterpart to the Crystal Palace in South London. service. The world's first public broadcasts of (then) "high-definition" television were made from Alexandra Palace in November 1936. 📺

Wombatwandering took it to SideTracked – Abbey Wood Elizabeth Line

London, United Kingdom
- 9.74 miles

You’ve caught the new Elizabeth Line train all the way to the end of the line in Abbey Wood, East London. I was after a Wherigo but also picked up a FTF and a T5 so a good day out. Any famous people I hear you ask? Why yes, Kate Bush attended the convent school at the top of Knee Hill and Tinie Tempah attended St. Paul's Catholic School in Abbey Wood. 💃
