About This Item

TB has a piece of American Chestnut wood attached to it. This rot resistant wood was once one of the most common trees in the Eastern U.S. It was used for fence posts, railroad ties, building materials and furniture. The wood looks a lot like Oak but has a mellow reddish brown color. It was almost destroyed by blight in the early 1900's and ceased to be available as commercial lumber by about 1920.

Thanks for the Chestnut history. It does look a lot like Oak, but doesn't seem as dense. Thanks for sharing!!

Being a forester as well I was attracted to this and a good Dendrology lesson. I was brought up in the mid-west and saw the chestnut blight also march through as far as the Missouri River. As I recall there were some spared on West because of the plains. Will watch for an opportunity to make other folks aware of this grand old tree. Old Forester 1

picked this TB up on way to Phoenix from colorado via vegas.. i am a forester by trade and happen to have several boards of chestnut in my garage that i picked up at a farm sale back in the 70's in ohio that had been in the farm barn since the 40's. one board is 22" in width and several others from 6-14 inches. rarely will you see a chestnut tree over 4" in diameter now days.. very beautiful wood just like the TB.
