Welcome to the Nerds #8 - Science Nerd Cache. This is the eighth in my "nerds" cache series placed around Arkabutla Lake.
I really love science. I always enjoy knowing how or why things work. I also enjoy conducting experiments. Recently, my wife and I had a picnic here at Arkabutla Lake. I noticed a large fire ant mound near the picnic table. While we enjoyed our Subway meals, I decided to conduct a little experiment:
Which part of my Subway picnic would the ants enjoy most?
- Parmesan Herb Bread
- Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki
- A Cheeto
- A piece of an apple
So I placed the 4 items next to the mound, poked it with a stick, and waited to see what they went for first. As you can see by the photo below, only one ant went for the apple. I suppose he was the "health nut" of the colony. They seemed to like the bread and the chicken about equal. But once a few of them got to the Cheeto, they immediately picked it up and started walking it towards their mound. Within 5 minutes, they had moved the Cheeto from the pavement to the top of their mound. They were still working on the bread and the chicken when we left. And the one lonely ant still munched on the apple all by himself. So, my conclusion is, ANTS REALLY LIKE CHEETOS. I hope to get my results published in some scientific journal very soon.
This Cache: You are looking for a small magnetic micro cache located at a very nice lake overlook. There is plenty of parking nearby, and there are several picnic tables available. Pack a picnic and enjoy the view. The recreation area does close at dark. Bring your own pen.
