Emmett's Wild Adventure I - Callahan Bypass Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

emmett: It is time to finish with archiving my caches. I understand some may be interested in completing this series. The containers are still out there as far as I know so you can still log finds but I will not be doing any maintenance. I don’t want them listed on GC.com any longer and will not be working on any of them unless and until I have the time to modify and publish these as new caches on another site.

Geocache Description:

The EWA series is comprised of nine basic caches, plus a bonus cache, and an Epilogue cache that was published last to offer additional help and tips for those interested in completing the series.

All of the EWA caches have been set up uniquely to allow for some extra fun and/or something different at the beginning. In general, there are two ways to complete each cache and you get to choose which option you think you will enjoy the most.

Those who complete the series will have visited a wide assortment of trails and terrain while finding micros and containers of all different types. It is hoped that the series will serve as a fine introduction for newcomers yet still hold the interest of veteran cachers with some twists and turns not commonly found in more traditional hunts.

For maximum enjoyment, it is strongly advised you consider the impact seasonal changes will have on some hunts. All of the EWA locales are spots that are very nice at certain times of the year, but not necessarily all year round. Make the best of the EWA collection by planning your visits at the optimal times. This is explained in more detail with the “Owners Tips” provided in the Epilogue cache.

About the EWA-1: Callahan Bypass

The posted coordinates mark a spot you may see on your EWA-1 journey. To determine the location of Stage One, you must solve the puzzle below. There are several access points to the south section of Callahan Park. For this hunt, it is best that you park in the lot on Edmunds Road. Parking coordinates are provided below.

Callahan Bypass is a multi-stage hunt with a long and short option. The basic setup is a seven stage, 3.5 mile trip through the south section of Callahan State Park. At the start of the hunt, you can access bonus containers that provide hints to make your searching easier, or you can tackle the cache at maximum difficulty without the hints.

Since this cache launches an "adventure" series, it is no ordinary multi. There are additional bonus containers that will allow you to bypass one or more stages of the hunt. You choose whichever adventure you think you will enjoy the most.

Option One – The Seven Stage Tour

This option will take you on a very nice hike covering the full length of Callahan South. Most of the micros are in plain view but they may pose a challenge to find so you have the option of seeking two bonus containers placed approximately twenty to twenty-five paces (50-70 feet) from the Stage One.

One bonus container provides hints for stages two through four while the other provides hints for stages five through seven. Feel free to take a hint sheet unless it is the last one left. These bonus containers are in plain view on opposite sides of the Stage One micro, both about the same distance away.

Option Two – Callahan Bypass

In addition to the containers with micro hide hints, five additional bonus containers have been hidden near an EWA-1 stage, with each allowing you to bypass one or more subsequent stages. These containers will be harder to find but will certainly save you time later on.

Two bypass containers have been hidden approximately twenty to twenty-five paces from Stage One and two others have been placed within the same distance from Stage Four.

There is also one additional bonus container hidden in a mystery location, near one of the seven stages. If you find it, this bonus offers a very significant reward.

Where is that seventh bonus container and how much time will it save you? How much of an adventure would it be if Emmett revealed everything?

The EWA-1 Puzzle

Despite its modest elevation amidst much higher peaks, Mount Pemigewasset offers great views from a bald summit that can be reached after an easy hike of one hour or less. There are plenty of nice places to hike in this particular area but there are none I know of that deliver such views while requiring only a short, easy hike.

At the top of Mount Pemigewasset lies a famous landmark that cannot be seen from the summit but it can be seen from miles away. As it turns out, there is a cache that shares its name with the famous landmark in question. The cache lies .957 miles at a bearing of 147.723 degrees from Mount Pemi’s summit.

The landmark also shares its name with a hill in Marlborough. Locate this Marlborough hill and mark its summit as Waypoint "X." Among caches that lie roughly due north of Waypoint X, identify the closest and call the northern UTM posted coords for that cache abcdefg, ie. if the UTM coords for that cache to the north are E 6647890 N 6265779, then a=6, b=2, c=6 etc.

When examining caches that lie due north of Waypoint X, keep in mind, this cache was published on December 31, 2006. Any cache to the north that was published after December 31, 2006 should not be considered.

To confirm you have identified the correct cache:

a+b+c+d+e+f+g = 35.

Put a decimal between e and f to make a three-digit number, e.fg (from above example, e.fg = 7.79). Now use the equation below to determine the coordinates for EWA-1 Stage One where your search should begin at a very large tree.

N 42 (e.fg x 4.3116)
W 71 (e.fg x 6.2044)

It might be a good idea to have a trail map with you so I have beefed up the number of maps at the Supply Station located near the parking lot.

Also, don't forget to bring a pen and paper. They might come in handy.

About the EWA-1 locale

EWA-1 will take you along a mix of level and hilly terrain. Though there are some trails in the park where biking is prohibited, this hunt has been designed to keep you on trails where biking is allowed.
