Emmett's Wild Adventure V - Micros or Mystery? Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

emmett: It is time to finish with archiving my caches. I understand some may be interested in completing this series. The containers are still out there as far as I know so you can still log finds but I will not be doing any maintenance. I don’t want them listed on GC.com any longer and will not be working on any of them unless and until I have the time to modify and publish these as new caches on another site.

Geocache Description:

About the EWA series

The EWA series is comprised of nine basic caches, plus a bonus cache, and an Epilogue cache that was published last to offer additional help and tips for those interested in completing the series.

All of the EWA caches have been set up uniquely to allow for some extra fun and/or something different at the beginning. In general, there are two ways to complete each cache and you get to choose which option you think you will enjoy the most.

Those who complete the series will have visited a wide assortment of trails and terrain while finding micros and containers of all different types. It is hoped that the series will serve as a fine introduction for newcomers yet still hold the interest of veteran cachers with some twists and turns not commonly found in more traditional hunts.

For maximum enjoyment, it is strongly advised you consider the impact seasonal changes will have on some hunts. All of the EWA locales are spots that are very nice at certain times of the year, but not necessarily all year round. Make the best of the EWA collection by planning your visits at the optimal times. This is explained in more detail with the “Owners Tips” provided in the Epilogue cache.

About EWA-5: Micros or Mystery?

EWA-5 will take you on a tour of some nice wooded trails in a spot that may be familiar to many but starting at an access point not commonly used.

As with the other EWA caches, this hunt offers two very different types of adventures. One option will be a traditional four-stage hunt with three micros that lead to the final cache. The other option offers a little something different, a mix of mystery, GPS navigation and map navigation. You choose which adventure you think you will enjoy most. If you get stumped on one path, you will have the other option available as a failsafe.

The puzzle

This hotel opened in July of 2004 and has been a popular destination ever since. Located at a crossroads very close to a much-traveled bridge, within two miles of the posted coordinates above, its visitors and guests are treated to a waterside view when they arrive.

None who rest here can ever be exactly sure how long their stay will be. Some have lodged briefly while others have relaxed for an extended stay.

Unlike a more traditional hotel, this place neither requires nor accepts reservations. No beds are offered, no breakfast is served.

Once the target of an Alien Invasion, this hotel has hosted numerous characters who have captured the imaginations of young and old alike. Lady Liberty, Piglet, and Pinocchio are just a few of the famous names on this hotel's "Who's Who" list of celebrity guests.

A precision marking of its main entrance should be a straightforward task and you will call the mark Waypoint "X."

Getting started:

The coordinates of Waypoint X may be used as follows to determine the trailhead coordinates.

Waypoint X = N 42 AB.CDE, W 71 FG.HIJ.

K = J + 2
L = D + A
M = D + G
N = B - L

Note: The numbers and letters are not exclusive. One or more letters may have the same value.

The EWA-5 trailhead is at: N 42 AB.LCJ, W 71 FG.LHM

There is roadside parking by a clearly marked fence opening in front of a meadow. The trail runs a short distance parallel to the road along the fence before entering the woods. From there, choose one of the two options below.

Option "A" - Traditional Micros

This is the longer of the two options and will take you on a four-stage tour of the area with three micros that will ultimately provide coordinates to the final cache. There is no mystery involved with this option, and the micros are visible to the naked eye when you have the right vantage point, so this route could be completed easily if your searching skills are sharp. However, there are no hints provided, so it may not be the fastest choice.

Stage A-1 is at: N 42 AB.EKN, W 71 FD.LKB

Option"B" - Mystery Challenge

This is the shorter of the two options by a slight amount and its stages should be easier to find, but this option will test your brain a bit. A small container at Stage B-1 will explain steps you must complete in order to determine the location of the final cache. Though there is less hiking distance with this option and it certainly could be completed quicker than Option A, there is some mystery involved, so it may not be the fastest choice.

Stage B-1 is at: N 42 NB.LEK, W 71 FD.CFG

About the EWA-5 locale

This parcel offers wide, hard packed trails great for jogging and hiking. Several bridges and streams, combined with interesting rock formations, both natural and man made, dot the landscape. Biking is not allowed.

The area appears to be a favorite spot for mosquitoes. During the warm season, it would be wise to have a can of repellent on hand for the trip.

The hike is mostly level but there will be a couple of slopes to climb regardless of which option you choose. Option "A" measures about a mile and a quarter round trip. Option "B" is slightly shorter.

Trail maps are provided at Stage B-1. If you plan to take Option A, and want to bring a map, you can print one online from here (visit link)
