Emmett's Wild Adventure VI - Kids Treasure Chest Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

emmett: It is time to finish with archiving my caches. I understand some may be interested in completing this series. The containers are still out there as far as I know so you can still log finds but I will not be doing any maintenance. I don’t want them listed on GC.com any longer and will not be working on any of them unless and until I have the time to modify and publish these as new caches on another site.

Geocache Description:

About the EWA series

The EWA series is comprised of nine basic caches, plus a bonus cache, and an Epilogue cache that was published last to offer additional help and tips for those interested in completing the series.

All of the EWA caches have been set up uniquely to allow for some extra fun and/or something different at the beginning. In general, there are two ways to complete each cache and you get to choose which option you think you will enjoy the most.

Those who complete the series will have visited a wide assortment of trails and terrain while finding micros and containers of all different types. It is hoped that the series will serve as a fine introduction for newcomers yet still hold the interest of veteran cachers with some twists and turns not commonly found in more traditional hunts.

For maximum enjoyment, it is strongly advised you consider the impact seasonal changes will have on some hunts. All of the EWA locales are spots that are very nice at certain times of the year, but not necessarily all year round. Make the best of the EWA collection by planning your visits at the optimal times. This is explained in more detail with the “Owners Tips” provided in the Epilogue cache.

About EWA-6: Kids Treasure Chest

As the name suggests, this EWA hunt was made with kids in mind. There is a choice between two kid-friendly tasks at Stage One, the hike is only about a mile, and the final destination holds a very large cache with plenty of stash.

Please do not attempt to pick the cache up or remove the cache from its spot to look at the contents inside. You need only open the cover.

As with the other EWA hunts, there are two options to choose from. One option involves a search for numbers posted on trees. The other requires completion of a mini trivia challenge. Each option will provide coordinates to Stage Two. You choose which adventure you think you will enjoy the most.

The puzzle

The oldest house in this rural Massachusetts community was built in 1716 by the town's first white settler. Later, this man's grandsons would become famous as makers of a certain commonly used item. Today, that house built in 1716 has been preserved as a museum honoring the men and their work.

The museum is recognized by the National Register of Historic Places and is open year round. It is located within five miles of the EWA-6 posted coordinates and might make for a nice stop either before or after the EWA-6 hunt.

Identify this museum and mark the midpoint of the north section of the parking lot as Waypoint "X." To refine your result, identify the nearest posted coordinates as of May 1, 2007 and project a waypoint from that location 0.776 miles away at bearing of 184.10 degrees. This will give you the precise coordinates for Waypoint X.

To confirm your result: Waypoint X is N 42 AB.CDE, W 71 BF.CGC

CDE + CGC = 735

If you did not get the same result, use the math below to refine your numbers backwards.

A thru G are single digits, each with a different value.

The vaule of A, B and F should be evident.

C = B - 1
D = C + 2
E = C - 1

Now discard the values for A thru I since these letters will again be used for the Stage Two calculation, but with different values.

Getting started:

Stage One is located 3.637 miles at a bearing of 119.401 degrees from Waypoint X. There is some off road parking available by the trailhead, and room for cars along the road nearby as well.

Double check your coordinates with the following:

S-1 = North AB.CDE, West FG.HIJ

A + B + C + D + E + F + G + H + I + J = 58

Option One: Number Search

The start container will identify the midpoint of an area around which plastic numbers have been posted on trees. A total of eight single digit numbers between one and nine have been posted. Your task is to determine which number between one and nine is missing, then apply the formula provided at Stage One to obtain the coordinates for Stage Two.

Option Two: Mini Trivia Challenge

This challenge involves eight questions, the answer to each will be a number between one and nine. Each answer is different. Your task is to determine which number between one and nine is missing among the correct answers, then apply the formula provided at Stage One to obtain the coordinates for Stage Two.

Note: The missing number from Option One may or may not be the same as the missing number from Option Two. The formulas are different.

Each option will provide direct coordinates to Stage Two micro along with a hint. Stages Two and Three are micros close to the trail, each provide coordinates and a hint for the next stage. Stage Four is the final stop and is well off the trail but the ground cover is sparse.

The following letters and values will be needed to calculate the Stage Two coordinates. Make sure you bring this information with you for the hunt.

K = 192
L = -62
M = 8
N = 256
P = 27

About the EWA-6 locale

Suitable for hiking and biking, this is a nice wooded area that has no doubt been overlooked by many who may have visited nearby. A trail map is available online but is not needed for the hunt. Elevation gain is modest.

A word of caution about two of the stages. Please be gentle when extracting the Stage Two micro. It's "host" is not very sturdy and won't last if treated roughly. Also, if you bring the kid(s), be careful when approaching the final cache. I'm no expert, but it looks to me like there is a fair amount of low lying poison ivy in the area.
