Emmett's Wild Adventure II - Which Way From Here? Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

emmett: It is time to finish with archiving my caches. I understand some may be interested in completing this series. The containers are still out there as far as I know so you can still log finds but I will not be doing any maintenance. I don’t want them listed on GC.com any longer and will not be working on any of them unless and until I have the time to modify and publish these as new caches on another site.

Geocache Description:

About the EWA series

The EWA series is comprised of nine basic caches, plus a bonus cache, and an Epilogue cache that was published last to offer additional help and tips for those interested in completing the series.

All of the EWA caches have been set up uniquely to allow for some extra fun and/or something different at the beginning. In general, there are two ways to complete each cache and you get to choose which option you think you will enjoy the most.

Those who complete the series will have visited a wide assortment of trails and terrain while finding micros and containers of all different types. It is hoped that the series will serve as a fine introduction for newcomers yet still hold the interest of veteran cachers with some twists and turns not commonly found in more traditional hunts.

For maximum enjoyment, it is strongly advised you consider the impact seasonal changes will have on some hunts. All of the EWA locales are spots that are very nice at certain times of the year, but not necessarily all year round. Make the best of the EWA collection by planning your visits at the optimal times. This is explained in more detail with the “Owners Tips” provided in the Epilogue cache.

About EWA-2: Which Way From Here?

Which Way From Here is a multi stage cache with a short and long option. The long option is of low to moderate difficulty, while the short option offers more of a challenge. You choose which adventure you think you will enjoy most.

Stage One marks a spot in the middle of the trail that will serve as the beginning point for each option. To the left, no more than twenty feet off the trail, is a micro that leads to the short path to the cache, a hike that should take less than an hour round trip from Stage One. To the right, no more than twenty feet off the trail, is an easier-to-find six-inch-long container that leads to the longer path to the cache, a hike that could take about an hour and a half round trip from Stage One.

The EWA-2 puzzle

Somewhere within two miles of the posted coordinates, a certain notable structure was erected by Lieutenant Abraham Williams in 1665 and was destroyed by Indians in 1676. It was rebuilt and managed by a prominent local family for more than one hundred years. A later owner of the property is an ancestor of Microsoft's Bill Gates

According to one source, "It was the scene of countless interesting incidents and was visited by many notable fellows ... One of the most memorable days in the history of the place was October 23, 1789, when shortly after his inauguration, President George Washington tarried there for several hours and took dinner with some of the local functionaries."

The structure is long since gone, torn down in the 1940s, but a marker sits in plain view as testimony of this interesting historic place. Find the marker and mark that spot and call it Waypoint X.

Using Geocalc high accuracy method, calculate the distance and bearing from the posted coordinates to Waypoint X and call the distance “A” and bearing “B.”

The distance from Waypoint X to Stage One is = A + 0.771

The bearing from Waypoint X to Stage One is = B + 130.822

Parking is NNE of Stage One.

Keep in mind, ground zero for Stage One is the middle of the trail. If your particular reading points into the woods, do not follow it in. The micro hidden to the left and container hidden to the right are no more than twenty feet off the trail.

About the EWA-2 locale

The trails are clearly marked and are rocky in some places. There is a mix of wide and narrow trails and there is potential for some elevation gain but nothing real steep.

During winter/spring, postions of one or two major trails may flood after any significant melting or rainfall. Allow at least a week or two for the water to subside before attempting this cache.

An alternate problem has been observed at one or two stages during cold weather. As a result. those who attempt this cache during freezing temperatures would be well advised to bring something to chip away at ice.
