Comet Halley is one of the more famous of the celestial bodies
called comets. It is named after the man who predicted its return
every 76 years. He did not live long enough to see his theory come
true. Its next visit will be in 2062.
Comets are sometimes called “dirty snowballs” as they are a cold
frozen gases and rocky materials. Comets orbit around the sun in
long, elliptical paths; they spend most of their time in the frozen
outer planet region.
As they get near to the Sun and are heated, the volatile gases
evaporate and boil, creating a visible glowing head and tail.
Surprisingly, the glowing tail does not trail in the path of
travel, but points away from the Sun, driven by the Solar wind.
Comets actually have multiple tails, with all the different
materials coming off of it. Each visit near the sun the comet melts
more and more until there is just a rocky core left and it becomes,
just another asteroid.
