As part of the 'You oughta see the water' series of caches you
will visit lakes and water features that are all interconnected and
together, drain over 60 square kilometres of land to provide water
for consumption and water for production of electricity!
Melynllyn (Yellow Lake) is located just over 600 metres in
altitude and covers 18.5 acres in area. It had a small dam that was
built in 1887 but this was deliberately breached in 1970. The water
flows down Afon Melynllyn (Yellow Lake River) which joins the Afon
Dulyn (Black Lake River) further down which in turn makes its way
to Llyn Eigiau through diverted rivers and tunnels.
It would appear that the dam was built to provide water power
for the now abandoned Melynllyn Hone quarry. Remains of which, and
an old iron wheel can still be seen today.
Car parking is available in Cwm Eigiau at N53 10.717 W3
53.970.
Ignore the blurb on the front page of the book about
providing you with co-ords for the next cache. You Oughta See the
Water was originally being planned out as pyramid scheme. But I
changed my mind.
