Geocache Description:

It is a significant walk in, a round hike of about 8 miles. Check the weather forecast as you will be high up in mountain terrain. The cache is not near the lake as the lake is place to pause and contemplate as there is a memorial next to the lake.

As part of the 'You oughta see the water' series of caches you will visit lakes and water features that are all interconnected and together, drain over 60 square kilometres of land to provide water for consumption and water for production of electricity!

The cache was originally going to be located next to the lake so that you could visit the memorial for the plane crash. However, whilst I was still in my planning stages and buying ammo boxes a cache was placed there, so I've placed my cache 140 metres on to ensure that it would get past by the reviewers. You really should visit the memorial, it is very nearby at the following co-ords N53 09.730 W3 57.791.

The memorial exists because on the 9th of December, 1957, Flight Lieutenant W. A. Bell and Flight Lieutenant K. C. F. Shelley were killed when their English Electric (Avro built) Canberra B.Mk.2 WK129 being operated by the Radar Research Establishment at RAF Pershore, crashed on Carnedd Llewelyn. The aircraft was being used for trials in conjunction with a Ministry of Supply Radar unit which was mounted on the summit of Drum about 4 miles from the crash site. Indeed, on the walk up to the crash site, you will notice many different parts of aluminium, landing gear and the main bulk of the engine.

Please take your time to enjoy the solitude of this less visited lake, and the views on your way up. This lake is just a pool where some springs surface (northern end of lake), bogs start to form into trickles and trickles make their way here. This pool then empties into a river which eventually becomes Afon Eigiau (Eigiau River) which then makes its way down to the lake that you walked passed by the dam.

The cache is a large ammo box. I kindly request that TBs and geocoins are NOT left here as it will not be one of the most visited caches due to the remoteness and long walk in.

Nearest parking is located in Cwm Eigiau at the following co-ords N53 10.717 W3 53.970.
