About This Item

Hanging with Dave Matthews and My Friend Debbie

This is my personal travel bug. In addition to keeping track of my mileage, I'll use it record an ongoing log of our adventures.

This Bug shares my screenname that I use on various DMB forums. It's play on the song title, "One Sweet World" and my first name. The Dave Matthews Band is my favorite band and I've seen them in concert over 50 times. I've traveled across the country to see them play making it as far as Washington state! I thought it fitting name for my personal TB, as I've been quite the travelbug in my past!

[Warning: The TB logs and photos may contain spoilers.]

If you meet me on a geocache hunt, ask me for the TB tracking number and you can log a find.

Retrieve It from a Cache 7/29/2006 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Otsiningo Overlook New York   Visit Log

With the boys driving everyone crazy today, I was begged to get them out of the house to go caching. Fine by me -- I was afraid we wouldn't get a chance this weekend. Our car has been out of commission and we just got it back from the repair shop. With so much catching up to do on everything I didn't know how much time I could have to squeeze in some caching.

We started the day by finishing up Otsiningo Overlook. In some parts it was difficult to discern where the trail led and keep on them. I wish we had stayed on the trails -- it would have made finding both of the last two parts much easier, I'm sure. Ryder found both parts very easily and he was very happy about that. This was nice cache. The coordinates for all 4 parts were exacty and such easy finds, while the hike was pleasant.

Retrieve It from a Cache 7/23/2006 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Merry-go-Round Pt. 5 The End is Near New York   Visit Log

We had made several trips to Rec Park before in order to find this cache, with no success. Most of the times it was confirmed not to be there. This time it was incredibly easy, because it was on the ground below the bleachers. Didn't have any trouble at all. I didn't even have to bend down or crawl under to get it -- practice was ending and a sweet ballplayer came and asked me what I lost and retrieved it for us!

We signed it, took careful note of the coded letters for the part 6 multi, and tried to decide how to place it back since I didn't know where it was actually supposed to be. I found a spot that would be easy to describe and put it there. I sent an email to the cache owner and described where I put it back so he could correct it if he saw fit.

What a relief to complete this one finally! Now if I can only find part 2 we could move on to part 6 and be done with this series once and for all! I only hope it will be worth it! That better be some cache at the end.

After Marry-go-Round Part 5 we decided to give Parkview Magic another go. The owner had emailed me the other day about my last DNF. He said he had replaced it, gave me a general area (which was where we had looked) and a description of the container. Despite this knowledge, we still came up empty. I'm pretty sure it was missing last time as well as this time. The area is trashed worse than before and it is quite clearly the party spot. Desparately in need of CITO! I wish I knew what was up with this one. I don't want to make another go at it until I know it's there. If I'm going to have to sort through trash, I better find the cache!

That was our last stop for today. We're taking the car in for repair on Tuesday, so no more caching for at least a week. Bummer! Hopefully this will be the last we'll have to worry about the car for a while and we'll be able to cache more regularly for the rest of the summer.

Retrieve It from a Cache 7/23/2006 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Puttin' on the Fritz New York   Visit Log

Puttin on the Fritz was a nice little cache, other than the doggy doo right by the cache, ewww! But it was fun and quick and we had a nice time.

Retrieve It from a Cache 7/23/2006 Bear Paughs retrieved it from First Ward Pool Memories New York   Visit Log

Started off our day today by making a second attempt at Otsiningo Overlook. We had tried this almost a year ago but part one had been missing at the time. Since it was a nice day out with no humidity we figured it'd be perfect to go on a hike. Julian found the first two parts quickly. We decided to stop at that point and come back for parts 3 and 4 another day. It was starting to get warmer and we really wanted Ryder with us when we finished it up, so we put it on hold for now. Ryder hurt his shoulder a few days ago when Julian and him were playing football and it got too rough. He opted to stay home with dad instead of coming out with us today.

After Otsiningo Overlook we headed to First Ward Pool Memories. There were a bunch of onlookers, but with a slight of hand I was able to swipe the cache with no problem, coordinates were dead on and it was in the first place that I felt for it. After replacing it we checked out the pool, took some pics and left to go to Puttin' on the Fritz.

Retrieve It from a Cache 7/16/2006 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Jacob's Ladder New York   Visit Log

Since we still had a little time we went after Jacob's Ladder. This one had been in some danger from the flooding, but survived very well. Cache and contents were in excellent shape, which is exactly what I am learning to expect from a snail cache. (There are a few cachers I've learned that have the nicest caches, crisp log sheets and nice and clean and such. Funnily enough, it seems they're all the woman cachers!) It was a quick and easy find did not prompt any ewwwwws, which is always a treat lately.

After the find the boys played in the park for a short while. It was a nice little park and very peaceful.

Overall we enjoyed our quick hour or so that we managed to get out today. The 2 smilies felt so much better than the 2 DNFs of yesterday!

Retrieve It from a Cache 7/16/2006 Bear Paughs retrieved it from 71 Quickie New York   Visit Log

We had an hour today, so we ran over to try 71 Quickie again, this time with lightening fast results. I placed my hand right on it when I was explaining where I thought it should be. I could have sworn we looked there last time! That's the way it always goes I guess.

After this we wanted to try First Ward Pool Memories, but for some reason I didn't have it in my GPS. I didn't think I'd updated my PDA recently and thought maybe the coordinates had changed from when it was originally in their before it was disabled, so I didn't know whether to bother with those ones. We decided to skip it for now and come back later in the week.

Write note 7/15/2006 Bear Paughs posted a note for it   Visit Log

Well, we've been pretty much without a car for the last week, so it was good to go out today, even if the result was 0 for 2. First I took the boys on an errand hunt -- I meant to surprise them by picking up some supplies for our first hide, but with all their farting around before we could leave the house, we ended up getting to the place just after they closed. So we'll save that errand for another day.

After that it was on to El Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead). It was just way to hot for this cache today. My hair kept falling in my eyes, and it was so steep that hands were required, making it impossible to hold the GPSr and keep a signal. I left the boys at the top and went on the cache hunt. I looked for a while in a lot of places but had no luck. When I wrenched my knee so badly that I got shooting pains and began to fear I wouldn't be able to make it back up to the boys, I gave up.

From there we decided to stop and look for part 1 of Park View Magic again. The cache owner said it was replaced, but we couldn't find it. We did, however, find a lot of evidence of party activity so we wonder if this one's been muggled.

We have to take it easy until we get a new car, as this one's on it's dying breath. It's a shame that this has to happen now when the boys are out of school and the daylight lasts so long. We want to be caching much more frequently than we are.

Hopefully our first hide will be coming soon. I'm slowly trying to get all the supplies, plus I've ordered some TB tags so the boys can launch travelbugs with the cache, which they are really excited about. Also this week we're going to set the boys up with their own accounts and backlog their finds separate from my Bear Paughs account. Lots of fun projects going on!

Retrieve It from a Cache 7/6/2006 Bear Paughs retrieved it from De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas New York   Visit Log

After yesterday's hike and the climb back to our car at Montage Mountain last night (and we still didn't get home until 3am!) I wasn't sure I was up for the track tonight. Steve suggested I try the cache again instead of our usual workout, so I went for it (besides, it's been driving me crazy!) So here's what went down with De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (was that the name? I thought it was slightly different when I logged a couple days ago. EDIT: Yup, I'm not going crazy. A couple days ago it was De Myster Sathanas)

Got the cache and played until I got the darned thing open. I can't imagine that the result that opened it was correct given the cache description, especially since previous logs indicate it's been changed before. I mean, it was way off. So I did something very rude and out of line and changed it to what I thought was supposed to be the correct solution. I emailed the cache owner to tell him I did so and why and hope I didn't step on his toes. I also offered to switch it back at his word.

Yup, I've become one of those people. It wasn't my cache to do that to, but I hate the thought of someone else not being to open it because the aparatus is so touchy. I have the luxury of being in the area all the time, not so for a lot of people, and I didn't know when the owner would check on it. Now I'm mad at myself for doing it. I should have just let it go and let the owner take care of it. I like to think I was being helpful, and I hope he takes it as such. I don't want to step on his or anyone's toes. Oh well, I'll know how it went once I get his response.

Updated to add -- I got a response from the cache owner who expressed his thanks to me for correcting the puzzle. He indicated he might end up archiving it because it keeps happening (I hope not, we like this type of wooded walk in the middle of town). Oh well, sigh of relief, I'm happy this worked out, although next time I'll email first and then act.
