The item that conceals the cache has obviously been here a while so we think this is a good spot to cover some of Mitchell Park's history.
When checked on the original cache it had gone along with the wagon. However we still think the walk in is worth while so the cache container has been replaced nearby.
- Mitchell Park was originally part of Pitt Town Common, one of six commons announced by Governor King in 1804 to provide grazing land for settlers with small holdings.
- This was revoked in 1890 and most of the land was subdivided and cleared or developed.
- According to local oral history some time after 1900 Mitchell Park was run as a private picnic ground.
- Then in 1958 the remaining Crown land at Mitchell Park was formally notified as a Reserve for Public Recreation giving Mitchell Park it's first protection from developers 68 years.
- In 1990 it became a state recreation area hopefully securing its protection.
