We're arguably the largest spider species on the planet. We live in the tropical rain forests of northern South America. During the dry season we live in deep burrows. During flood conditions we move to the trees. Because of our massive size we are not good climbers. We prefer to ambush our prey. Although we're known as bird eaters, we prefer mice, crickets, small snakes and frogs.
We can live up to 25 years, although the male of our species usually lives only about 5 years. Our leg span can reach as much as 12" and we can weigh up to 6 oz. Our fangs can grow to as long as an inch. We tend to be loners and don't make especially good pets for the beginner collector. We can be cranky and fast when perturbed. When aroused we'll show our displeasure by rearing up, kicking a cloud of urticating hairs from our abdomen - or even hissing like a snake by rubbing our bristly legs together.
Compared to most other pets, we are very clean and require very little maintenance. We like a humid, warm environment and a shallow dish of water. We're a sight to behold, and not just because of our massive size. Below is a photo of one of my molts. This has since been mounted in a frame for the FTF prize.
Update: Congratulations Irlpguy on your FTF!
It was a pleasure handing over the prize to you. NeoGeo is very happy to know his Goliath molt is in such appreciating hands.
