Geocache Description:

The Ling-Temco-Vought A-7 Corsair II was a carrier-capable subsonic light attack aircraft introduced to replace the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk. The A-7 airframe design was based on the successful supersonic Vought F-8 Crusader, although it was somewhat smaller and rounded off. The Corsair II initially entered service with the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. It was later adopted by the United States Air Force, including the Air National Guard, to replace the Douglas A-1 Skyraider, North American F-100 Super Sabre and Republic F-105 Thunderchief.

The aircraft on display as part of this memial is an A-7D Corsair II manufactured in Dallas, Texas by the Vought Aircraft Division of LTV Corporation. This A-7 was delivered to the Air Force on November 2, 1973 at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It was transferred to the 132nd Tactical Fighter Wing of the Iowa Air National Guard on February 25, 1977. This aircraft served with the Iowa Air National Guard in Des Moines until its delivery to Carroll on January 6, 1993.

It has been flown as far as Europe, Central America, and Japan.  This aircraft was retired with 4,273 flight hours and last flew over Carroll County in the fall of 1992.   The A-7D was equipped with an Allison TF41-1 turbofan with 14,250 lbs thrust. It was armed with a 70 mm M61 Vulcan Cannon and could carry up to 15,000 pounds of bombs.  The maximum speed of this aircraft was 620 mph.  A-7s served throughout the Vietnam War and an A-7D flew the last air strike of the war on August 15, 1973.

Service History:

  • 1973-1979: USAF 354th Tactical Fighter Wing, Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, Sout Carolina
  • 1979-92: Iowa Air National Guard 124th Tactical Fighter Squadron (132nd TFW).
