Con esta serie, Vitoria-Gasteiz Ayer y Hoy, os quiero acercar a varios rincones de nuestra preciosa ciudad, para contaros cosas curiosas y ver como los cambios arquitectonicos o de las costumbres de los vitorianos han forjado la identidad actual tan unica de Vitoria-Gasteiz.

El aeropuerto viejo de Vitoria, el segundo de los tres que ha tenido la ciudad, se ha convertido en cimientos de la urbanización de Salburua. Desde que el nuevo aeródromo internacional de Foronda fue inaugurado en 1980 apenas si servía para probar aeromodelos. Pese a estar ya en desuso, el Ayuntamiento de Vitoria quiso mantener el trozo de la viaja pista que queda al sur y la convirtió en el Paseo del Aeropuerto Viejo.

Ya poco queda de lo que fue el antiguo aeropuerto, pero lo que sí han quedado son fechas y hechos para la parte más oscura del aeródromo vitoriano. El lunes 26 de abril de 1937, hacia las cuatro y media de la tarde, despegaron del aeropuerto viejo cuatro bombarderos Heinkel 111, que tenían como objetivo destruir Gernika. Arrojaron sobre la ciudad, durante más de tres horas, en un día de mercado, no menos de 10.000 kilos de bombas explosivas, y otros 30.000 kilos de bombas incendiarias. Era la primera vez que se bombardeaba una ciudad abierta, sin especial significación militar. Hubo 2.000 muertos y un millar de heridos. Von Richthofen y el general Mola, en su cuartel general, situado en el ya desaparecido Hotel Frontón de Vitoria, diseñaron la masacre.

HISTORY OF THIS PLACE

The old airport of Vitoria, the second of three that had the city has become the foundations for the development of the Salburua neighbourhood. Since the new international airport of Foronda was opened in 1980 it hardly served more than to test model airplanes. Despite being out of order for long, the Vitoria council wanted to keep the track to transfrom it into the Paseo del Aeropuerto Viejo (the old airport avenue).

Now little remains of what was the old airport, but dates still remains from the darkest time of the Vitoria airport. On Monday April 26th, 1937, at half past four in the afternoon, four Heinkel 111 bombers took off from here, aiming to destroy Gernika. They threw over the city, for more than three hours in a market day, no less than 10,000 kilos of explosive bombs and 30,000 kilos of incendiary bombs. It was the first time that a city has been boombed without special military significance. There were 2,000 dead and a thousand injured. Von Richthofen and General Mola, at its headquarters, located in the Hotel Fronton disappeared Vitoria, designed the slaughter.
