Geocache Description:

Since May 2000, the number of active geocaches in the world has continued to increase. Working out the xth active cache in the world is tricky though, as the number is constantly changing (up and down) when new caches are published and existing caches are archived.

The 1,000,000th active geocache in the world was not seemingly announced with any great fanfare (some online chat suggests it’s this one: ‘One Millionth Geocache, Macca, Vista's Best Trail’ in Vista, California, published on 7th March 2010).

Later on, Groundspeak seemed to have picked up on the milestone nature of active caches by announcing the 2,000,000th active geocache being ‘Overwatch #1’ near Alice Springs, Australia, published on 28th February 2013.

Further active cache milestones have been announced, eg. the 1 millionth active cache in the USA on 14th Sept 2015 – ‘Daddy's Fishing Hole’ near Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

All eyes are now on the 3,000,000th active cache in the world. Whether Groundspeak will publish the definitive cache to take the accolade remains to be seen. I’ve been tracking the number on a daily basis, and then hourly nearer the 3 million mark (see below) to try and predict the optimum time to submit to be in with a shout! This cache has been set to celebrate the event whatever the outcome.

... and then on an hourly basis...

Post-publication note: the first time that the active cache counter went to 3,000,000 was at 18:51 BST on 17th April 2017... it looks like Groundspeak will not be publishing details of the actual 3 millionth cache, instead there will be a souvenir available to celebrate the milestone.

Waypoint averaging has been used to set the co-ordinates, but tree cover could be problematic, especially at certain times of the year. There are a couple of options for parking and entry to the woods in the waypoints below. Please stick to the paths (until the last 40 ft or so to GZ) to protect the ecology of the woods. Wellies or walking boots can be a bonus after prolonged rain.
