Angora Turn (498)
A critical routefinding cache on the hike to Angora Peak.
COVID-19 status: The hike to this cache and on to Angora Peak is not closed due to Coronavirus. In fact, it is an excellent choice at this time due to the route being very little-traveled and mostly on a wide dirt road.
This cache marks a very easy-to-miss turn from road to trail. The cost of missing the turn is very high, as I learned after a 500+ vertical foot bushwhack!
Although the lower part of the hike passes through clearcut areas (much of which are now regrowing nicely), the upper reaches feature some remarkable terrain and views, rivaling or exceeding Saddle Mountain and Neahkahnie Mountain.
It may be a challenging hike due to its steepness, but the going is otherwise easy on dirt road and trails. There are severe dropoffs from the road at a few points, so manage children and pets carefully.
This cache is part of a loosely-related series:
Angora Turn (498) (The 498th active Seawind cache)
Pacific Heights (499) (The 499th active Seawind cache)
Forest Forever (500) (The 500th active Seawind cache)
The best parking for the hike is:
N 45° 46.855 W 123° 57.310 (saved as a waypoint)
Head up the dirt road and stay right at the first branch. Stay left on the main road at N 45 47.381 W 123 56.561 (entered as a waypoint) and then through the "Welcome" gate. Then, continue up to the spectacular Arch Cape View.
Proceed to Angora Turn. The cache is right on the trail you will need to continue on the hike. Reception is limited, so please use the hint. Then, continue on to Cycle of Life.
Another new cache was placed along with this one: Pacific Heights (499). Be sure to read the description of that cache for a valuable clue!
If you have a choice, pick a clear day for the hike to fully appreciate the great views along the way.
See you at the summit!
