Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Ruddy Doctor Caches, a series of puzzles linked together loosely with a whimsical story following the various regenerations of my favourite Time Lord.

The puzzles are nestled away in passages linking the various Doctor’s regeneration scenes, so you’ll need to skim at least through to find the goods and the occasional clue. You can assume coordinates are N 52° 53.XXX' W 001° XX.XXX' and will need you own pen and tweezers. All were conceived and placed by Doctor RuddRobins + checked and difficulty assessed by Mrs RuddRobins.

The notes at the end are random Docfacts not needed to complete the puzzle. I hope you find it all mildly amusing and it keeps you out of trouble for at least a little while J

The Ruddy Doctor 5: The Fifth Doctor

(Doctor number four turns into the Watcher, then gains youthful features and short straight hair. Doctor 5 sits up.)

DOCTOR 5: I. Oh.

(The Doctor staggers toward the TARDIS & you follow him into the control room)

DOCTOR 5: Ah. You've come to help me find the Zero Room. Welcome aboard. I'm the Doctor. Or will be if this regeneration works out.

(The Doctor enters the TARDIS’ many corridors, unravelling his old long scarf behind him to track the way.)

DOCTOR 5: Now, ordinary spaces, of course, show up on the architectural configuration indicators, but any good Zero Room is balanced to zero energy with respect to the world outside its four walls. Or however many walls it has.

(The DOCTOR 5 starts to run his fingers through his hair, and discovers that it is short and straight, not curly. He has almost finished unravelling his scarf.)

DOCTOR 5: There was a very good polygonal Zero Room under the Junior Senate block on Gallifrey, widely acclaimed for its healing properties. There are strong dimensioning forces this deep in the Tardis. Tend to make one a bit giddy especially this soon after a regeneration. I don't know. I can feel it isn't going to be as smooth as on other occasions. Sooner we get to this Zero Room place, the better, eh?

(The Doctor puts a shoe down as a marker to find his way back, now he's out of wool & starts behaving like his first self)

DOCTOR 5: I wonder, what would you do if you were me, hmmm? Or perhaps I should ask, what would I do if I were me.

[Tardis corridor]

(The DOCTOR 5 is now in 2nd DOCTOR 5 mode.)

DOCTOR 5: Not far now, Brigadier, if the Ice Warriors don't get there first. Oh no. Oh dear. We've wandered into the wrong corridor. We must be close to the main Tardis drive now. Jamie. Jamie, you go back.

YOU: No. I have to stay with you, Doctor.

DOCTOR 5: No, nonsense, be sensible, go back! When I say run, run! Don't you understand? The regeneration is failing.

(The DOCTOR 5 reaches a room with a full cheval mirror with descant recorder on the top, and a hat stand with panama and light beige coat with red trim on a hangar. The DOCTOR 5 gazes at his new features.)

DOCTOR 5: That's the trouble with regeneration. You never quite know what you're going to get.

(He tries playing the recorder, but blows too hard. It squeaks.)

DOCTOR 5: No.

(He finds a cricket bat by the hat stand, smiles & and attires himself accordingly, putting on a cricket jumper  and changing into beige striped trousers and plimsolls. He tries a few batting shots in front of the mirror, then puts on the coat and panama. He heads back to the Control Room.)

DOCTOR 5: Well, I suppose I'll get used to it in time. Now, time to dance to the Guardian’s tune again wouldn’t you say: this puzzle seems elementary, doesn’t it?

DOCTOR 5: Two parts – fiendish! Still, I just had to look to myself and my number was up – speaking of which . . .

(The Doctor tumbles into the console room. He closes the doors and sets the Tardis in flight, seeming to be short of breath and feverish. He drops to the floor.)

DOCTOR: Is this death?

(The Doctor lies on the floor)

DCOTOR: Going soon. Time to say goodbye. I might regenerate. I don't know. Feels different this time.

(Past companions flash before his eyes)

TEGAN: What was it you always told me, Doctor? Brave heart? You'll survive, Doctor.

TURLOUGH: You must survive. Too many of your enemies will delight in your death, Doctor.

KAMELION: Turlough speaks the truth, Doctor.

NYSSA: You're needed. You mustn't die, Doctor.

TURLOUGH: Too many enemies would be delighted.

ADRIC: You know that, Doctor.

NYSSA: You mustn't die, Doctor.

ADRIC: You know that, Doctor.

DOCTOR: Adric?

NYSSA: You mustn't die, Doctor.

MASTER: No, my dear Doctor, you must die! Die, Doctor! Die, Doctor. Bwahahahahahaha!

(As the images of his companions and his laughing enemy circle his mind, the Doctor's features change. Back comes the curly hair. Suddenly a slightly older man sits up and looks at his hands.)

YOU: DOCTOR?

DOCTOR: You're expecting someone else?

YOU: I, I, I . . .

DOCTOR: That's three I's in one breath. Makes you sound a rather egotistical person.

YOU: What's happened?

DOCTOR: Change, my dear. And it seems not a moment too soon.

Notes

The Fourth Doctor was seriously injured after falling off the Pharos Project Radio Telescope so he merged with a future incarnation of himself called the Watcher and regenerated into his new youthful fifth incarnation. The regeneration was difficult, and nearly failed, with the Doctor briefly taking on personality aspects from his four previous incarnations.

Clever, considered and kind, the Fifth Doctor's world was one of fascination and science: he had a vulnerable side, a tendency towards indecisiveness and travelled with a host of companions. The Fifth Doctor was confronted with tragedy when companion Adric died trying to stop a space freighter from crashing into prehistoric Earth.

The Fifth Doctor's chosen mode of dress was a variation of an Edwardian cricketer's kit, and he was even seen to carry a cricket ball in one of his pockets (which saved his life in one adventure). He wore a cream-coloured frock coat, striped trousers, plimsoll shoes, and occasionally a pair of spectacles. He frequently wore an optimo-style Panama hat that had a red band with a black and white pattern, which he would roll up and place in an inside coat pocket.

On his left lapel, this Doctor wore a celery stalk. He claimed that the celery would turn purple in the presence of certain gases in the "Praxis" range to which he was allergic. Infected with a deadly virus and with only enough antidote to save one, the Fifth Doctor sacrificed his life to save his friend Peri.
