NAACP
After legal deliberations following numerous protests, the Black Construction Coalition succeeded in getting the city to pass the Pittsburgh Plan, a resolution to place more African Americans in construction unions and jobs. The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) provided unwavering support to Black construction workers and the Black community in Pittsburgh. Nate Smith, leader of Operation Dig and the Pittsburgh Plan, was a co-director of the Black Construction Coalition, which NAACP was part of. Its influence on civil rights in Pittsburgh continued beyond Operation Dig, however. After Martin Luther King’s assassination, the leader of its Pittsburgh branch, Alma Fox, led a peaceful march from the Hill District to Point State Park. NAACP's misson is "to achieve equity, political rights, and social inclusion by advancing policies and practices that expand human and civil rights, eliminate discrimination, and accelerate the well-being, education, and economic security of Black people and all persons of color" (NAACP) and they continue to be an active organization to this day.
